In a lighthearted revelation that captivated guests, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, publicly forgave Hajiya Hadiza Bala Usman for keeping her recent marriage a secret from him. The moment unfolded during the high-profile event marking Usman's 50th birthday on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
A Tribute and a Teasing Revelation
Gbajabiamila began his speech by paying glowing tributes to the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit. He highlighted the critical nature of her role, which involves close collaboration with the Office of the Chief of Staff, and her consistent contribution to the administration's goals.
"She has been an absolute delight to work with," Gbajabiamila stated. "I thank you for adding value to my office and this administration." He extended heartfelt birthday wishes on behalf of all attendees and the many others impacted by her work, wishing her clarity of purpose, continued impact, and many more years of peace, prosperity, and good health.
The "Secret" Marriage Confession
However, the Chief of Staff concluded his remarks with a personal and humorous anecdote. He emphasized the close personal and professional bond he shares with Usman, noting they confide in each other about almost everything.
"But one thing she didn't tell me was that she was getting married," he joked. He revealed that Usman had spent Christmas Day at his home in Lagos, where they sat, ate, and celebrated together, yet she never mentioned her marital status. "Even then, I made my feelings known to her, and she's still explaining till today, asking for penance," Gbajabiamila said, before graciously declaring, "You're forgiven, Hadiza. Happy married life!"
Shettima's Charge on Selfless Service
Also speaking at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima used the occasion to charge public servants to remain selfless, disciplined, and consistent. He stated that enduring legacies in governance are built on resilience, strength of character, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
"If we are to raise generations ready to lead with purpose, to deliver with excellence and to serve with courage, we must remember this truth: intention without the willingness to pay the price of service remains wishful thinking," Shettima advised.
Eulogizing the celebrant, the Vice President described Hadiza Bala Usman as a role model not only for the northern Nigerian girl but for the entire nation. He noted that her distinguished public service career was forged quietly through a deep sense of responsibility, diligence, and a focus on strengthening institutions.
"Her place in our public service history is secure. What she has become is the product of decisions taken quietly, responsibilities carried fully and institutions strengthened with care," Shettima stated, cementing the event's tone of celebration for both a personal milestone and a professional legacy.
