Gov. Umar Urges Citizens' Engagement for Good Governance

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, stating that the country’s strength lies in the resilience, diversity, and determination of its people. In his statewide broadcast to commemorate Democracy Day, he noted that the occasion provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey, progress recorded, and the collective responsibility of leaders and citizens in strengthening democratic institutions.

Democracy Day Significance

Governor Umar congratulated Nigerians and the people of Jigawa State on the 2026 Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a crucial moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who stood for justice, freedom, and the right of citizens to choose their leaders. According to him, the significance of June 12 extends beyond a date on the national calendar, representing courage, conviction, and the enduring belief that the will of the people must remain the foundation of governance.

“Today, we remember and honour the men and women whose sacrifices helped shape the democratic Nigeria we have today,” he said. “Their struggles remind us that democracy is not merely about elections. It is about building institutions that command public confidence, upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of citizens, and ensuring that government remains accountable to the people.”

Leadership Responsibility

He further stated that democracy places a solemn responsibility on those entrusted with leadership to govern with humility, fairness, and a sincere commitment to the public good. Reflecting on developments in Jigawa State, the Governor said his administration has pursued a people-centered approach anchored on consultation, openness, and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.

The administration’s 12-Point Development Agenda was conceived not as a political slogan but as a practical framework for addressing aspirations in critical sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, economic development, social protection, and environmental sustainability. “Over the past three years, we have remained focused on creating opportunities for our people, expanding access to quality education and healthcare, transforming the agricultural sector, investing in infrastructure, and strengthening social support systems for the most vulnerable members of our society,” he said.

Peace and Stability

The Governor further stated that peace and stability remain among Jigawa State’s greatest assets, noting that development can only be attained in an environment where lives and property are secure. He commended traditional institutions, religious leaders, community organizations, security agencies, and citizens for their contributions towards preserving harmony and social cohesion across the state.

Governor Namadi called on citizens to continue embracing values that sustain democratic societies, including tolerance, respect for differing opinions, civic responsibility, and active participation in community development. “Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, informed, and committed to the common good. Nation-building is not the responsibility of government alone. It requires the contributions of every citizen through lawful conduct, hard work, patriotism, and respect for our shared values,” he said.

National Confidence

The Governor expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, saying the country’s strength lies in the resilience, diversity, and determination of its people. He reaffirmed support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that cooperation among all levels of government remains essential for addressing national challenges and advancing development.

“As we commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in the democratic ideals that bind us together as one people. Let us continue to work for a society where justice prevails, opportunities are expanded, and every citizen has a stake in our collective progress,” he urged. He prayed for continued peace, unity, and prosperity of Jigawa State and Nigeria, hoping that wisdom, diversity, and a common desire to build a nation future generations will be proud to inherit guide them.
