Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria's former head of state, has stated that his long-awaited autobiography was written to provide clarity on major decisions taken during his administration, particularly those concerning the Nigerian civil war, and not to reopen old wounds. In remarks released ahead of the book's public presentation, Gowon emphasized that the memoir offers his personal account of events that have largely been narrated from the perspectives of others over the years.
A Comprehensive Memoir
The autobiography, which spans 881 pages, is scheduled to be unveiled on May 19 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre. President Bola Tinubu is expected to attend the event as the special guest of honour, while General Theophilus Danjuma will formally unveil the book. The event is anticipated to draw political leaders, military veterans, diplomats, and senior government officials from across the country.
According to Gowon, the autobiography became necessary because many accounts of the civil war era failed to fully reflect his own reasoning as Nigeria's leader at the time. He explained, "Many accounts of the civil war era had been written from different perspectives over the years without fully reflecting my own reasoning as Nigeria's leader at the time."
Setting the Record Straight
Gowon further elaborated on his motivation for writing the book, stating, "By choosing to write, I took a conscious decision not to reopen old wounds but to clarify my thinking on policies and plans at a period often narrated by others. My story is one of conviction evaluated by circumstances at the crossroads of expectations and reality."
The former head of state expressed hope that the autobiography would contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of his tenure and the difficult decisions made during a turbulent period in Nigeria's history.
