The Anioma State Creation Movement has expressed strong support for Senator Ned Nwoko, recognizing his leadership in reviving efforts to establish Anioma State from present-day Delta State.
Movement Applauds Senator's Leadership
According to Tonnie Osita Oganah, the media director of the movement, Senator Nwoko represents a focused and patriotic leader whose dedication has revitalized a struggle that has continued for decades. The movement seeks to create a distinct Anioma polity and ensure equitable political representation for Igbos living west of the River Niger.
Oganah emphasized that the proposed state would address historical imbalances within the Nigerian federation. He pointed out that the Igbo nation currently has fewer states compared to other major ethnic groups, which has resulted in marginal allocations from the national revenue.
Cultural Alignment and Infrastructure Readiness
The media director provided detailed clarification on the cultural identity of the Anioma people. He explained that they share significant language, culture, and traditions with Igbos from states like Anambra, Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi. This cultural connection makes them distinct from other ethnic groups in the South-South region where they are currently situated.
Oganah argued that the proposed Anioma State naturally belongs in the South-East geopolitical zone. This move would be a strategic step toward balancing Nigeria's zonal structure, as the South-East remains the only zone with just five states, while others have six.
Highlighting the practicality of the proposal, Oganah noted that Anioma already possesses the necessary infrastructure to function effectively as a state. Asaba is ready to serve as a state capital, featuring an international airport, several universities, and established industries.
Confidence in National Leadership
Oganah also shared the perspective of the Anioma people regarding their place in Nigeria. He stated, "Anioma people can thrive in any zone in Nigeria because we have been in the western region and now in the South South with strangers who have nothing in common with us, whereas in the South East our kith and kin have so many traditions and languages which are similar to ours."
The movement commended President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly for demonstrating openness to the creation of new states. They expressed confidence that Anioma would be among the new states to be established, given the compelling case for its creation.
