The Headies Announces Toronto as Host City for 18th Edition
Headies 18th Edition to Be Held in Toronto

The organisers of the Headies Awards have announced that the 18th edition of the ceremony will be hosted in Toronto, Canada. This surprise announcement, revealed during “The Big Announcement” event at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos in June, shows a continued commitment by the organisers to expand the global footprint of Nigerian music.

Evolution of the Headies Awards

Originally established in 2006 by Hip Hop World Magazine as the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies have evolved into the most prestigious platform for celebrating Nigerian and African music excellence. The iconic Headie plaque, envisioned by founder Ayo Animashaun and drawn by Matthias Aragbada, symbolises the vibrant spirit of a young individual whose talent challenges global standards despite the challenges of the Nigerian environment.

The journey of the awards has been one of growth. From its humble beginnings at the Muson Center in Lagos for the first two editions, the ceremony has travelled through various venues, including Eko Hotel and Suites and the International Conference Centre in Abuja. In recent years, the awards shifted to an international stage, hosting its 15th and 16th editions in Atlanta, United States, before returning to Lagos for the 17th edition in 2025, themed “Back to Base”.

Strategic Move to Toronto

The decision to stage the 18th edition in Toronto is part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties with the African diaspora and the international music community. However, organisers are mindful of their roots. Founder Ayo Animashaun confirmed that the event will not abandon its local audience, as the Toronto ceremony will run simultaneously with a live watch party and selected award presentations in Lagos. Additionally, this edition will introduce a new training and investment summit aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s creative economy.

Nigerian Artists on the Global Stage

  • Sade Adu – The first Nigerian to win a Grammy, securing four awards throughout her legendary career.
  • Seal – A multiple-time winner with four Grammy trophies, including the iconic “Kiss from a Rose”.
