Kaduna Victims Demand Prosecution of Ex-Governor El-Rufai Over Demolitions and Job Losses
Traders and sacked teachers in Kaduna State, who were affected during the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, have issued a strong call for his prosecution by both federal and state governments. They allege widespread demolition of markets and homes, along with mass job losses over his eight-year tenure, which they claim has left many in severe hardship and violated their fundamental rights.
Market Demolitions Leave Traders Destitute
Speaking under various groups, the affected individuals detailed how their means of livelihood were destroyed. Alhaji Abduljaleel Abdullahi Namama, Chairman of the Rigasa Market Association, stated that traders were among the worst hit, with markets demolished without any compensation provided. He emphasized that the former governor had promised to pay compensation and rebuild the market, but no action was taken, leaving the once-busy commercial area deserted and resembling a ghost town.
Namama urged authorities to hold El-Rufai accountable, insisting that compensation must be paid for the damages caused. He warned that political support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be withheld until justice is served. Similarly, Mohamed Idris, Chairman of Kawo Market, reported that many traders who owned goods worth millions of naira have been rendered destitute due to property destruction, with promises of compensation and new markets remaining unfulfilled.
Sacked Teachers Decry Unfair Dismissals and Unpaid Entitlements
On another front, sacked teachers expressed their grievances over what they described as unfair dismissals and unpaid entitlements. Esther Moses, a former teacher from Romi, shared her personal tragedy, having lost both her job and her home during this period. She revealed that after 18 years of service, her entitlements remain unpaid, and the demolition of her house led to the death of her husband.
Another former teacher, Betty Henry, called on the government to intervene and ensure they receive their dues, stressing the need for justice. Joseph Chori, representing Concerned Kaduna Indigenes, alleged widespread human rights violations during El-Rufai's administration, noting that many affected individuals are also teachers who were sacked or had their houses demolished.
Calls for Justice and Political Consequences
Chori urged the federal government to continue its investigations and ensure that the former governor faces justice, including potential imprisonment. Jonathan Matthew, another resident who suffered personal losses, warned that failure to act could lead to political repercussions, with affected groups reconsidering their support for the APC in future elections unless their grievances are addressed and accountability is enforced.
The collective stance of these groups is clear: they demand restitution and legal action against those responsible, linking their political allegiance to the resolution of these issues. They maintain that without justice, their suffering will persist, and they will not hesitate to withdraw support from the ruling party.
