Kwankwasiyya Movement Criticizes Tinubu's Borrowing and NASS Oversight Failure
The Kwankwasiyya Movement has launched a sharp critique against the Federal government, accusing it of pushing Nigeria toward a perilous debt trajectory through what it describes as a reckless borrowing pattern under the Tinubu-led administration. In addition, the Kano-based political group has faulted the National Assembly for failing to fulfill its constitutional oversight responsibilities, raising alarms about the implications for the nation's economic stability and democratic integrity.
Economic Stability Under Threat
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the movement's spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, emphasized that the continuous approval of borrowing requests without adequate legislative scrutiny poses a severe threat to Nigeria's economic stability. He expressed deep concern over the country being plunged further into debt without transparent justification, broad consultation, or a clear framework for equitable utilization of funds.
Mohammed highlighted that this pattern of borrowing, following recent debt arrangements, raises critical questions about fiscal discipline and the long-term sustainability of the Federal government's financial policies. He warned that borrowing without clarity or restraint risks mortgaging the future of unborn generations, undermining accountability and the economy's prospects.
Concerns Over Resource Allocation and National Unity
The movement also voiced apprehension regarding an imbalance in how borrowed funds are being allocated and deployed across the country. Mohammed pointed out that there is a troubling perception that these resources are being skewed in favor of a particular region, which could undermine national unity and deepen inequality in an already fragile federation.
He stressed that Nigeria is built on principles of fairness, justice, and shared prosperity, and any policy that disproportionately tilts resources or weakens democratic institutions threatens these foundational values. This imbalance, he argued, could have far-reaching consequences for the nation's unity and stability.
Critique of National Assembly's Role
Dr. Mohammed criticized the National Assembly for what he termed an apparent alignment with the executive branch, rather than acting as an independent check on power. He noted that the legislature is expected to safeguard the interests of Nigerians, but instead, there is a pattern of uncritical approvals with minimal debate, resistance, or accountability.
According to him, the erosion of effective opposition within the legislature weakens democratic governance and concentrates excessive power in the executive. He argued that when critical decisions, such as massive borrowing requests, are passed without rigorous scrutiny, it undermines the very essence of representative democracy.
Call to Action for Accountability and Transparency
The Kwankwasiyya Movement called on civil society organizations, opposition parties, and citizens to demand greater accountability and transparency in governance. Mohammed reiterated the movement's commitment to responsible governance and urged the federal government to review its fiscal approach.
He urged all well-meaning Nigerians to rise to their constitutional responsibility of holding the government accountable and resisting any attempts to weaken democratic institutions. Specifically, he called for the government to immediately halt indiscriminate borrowing, ensure fair distribution of resources, and restore the independence and integrity of democratic institutions.
Mohammed concluded by emphasizing that justice, balance, and accountability are essential to Nigeria's survival and progress, warning that anything short of these endangers the unity and future of the nation.
