Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration has disclosed that it spent N456.558 million on medical residency training for 470 resident doctors in 2025. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, during the 2026 ministerial media briefing at the Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
Investment in Capacity Building
Ayantayo reaffirmed the government's commitment to building a more efficient and digitally driven public service through continuous investment in capacity building, industrial harmony, and workers' welfare. He noted that the ministry sponsored 248 officers to attend professional conferences, including 20 who participated in international conferences and 228 who attended local conferences.
Further Studies and Exchange Programme
Additionally, 4,830 officers were granted approval for further studies, comprising 25 full-time and 4,795 part-time beneficiaries. The Public-Private Industry Exchange Programme, which began in 2025, deployed 50 participants to private organisations for industry exposure. Ten officers secured approval for the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, while 100 mid-level officers completed a three-month Public Service Accelerator Programme focusing on advanced leadership, strategic management, and adaptive governance skills.
Social Intervention Programmes
The state government also disbursed over N2.13 billion to 3,301 vulnerable residents under the Eko Cares Financial Assistance Programme over the past year. Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr Afolabi Tajudeen, disclosed this at the briefing, adding that the 2026 budget allocation for the programme is N3.14 billion, signaling sustained welfare support amid economic challenges.
Pension Payments and Workers' Welfare
In a related development, Lagos State has paid N8.042 billion to retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme and Defined Benefit Scheme. Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, announced this during the briefing, emphasizing the administration's commitment to the welfare of serving and retired public servants. He described the public service as the engine room of governance and development in Lagos State and reaffirmed Governor Sanwo-Olu's dedication to improving workers' welfare, strengthening institutional reforms, and sustaining efficient service delivery.
