National Assembly Urges National Unity Behind Armed Forces After Borno Attack
The National Assembly has issued a clarion call for all Nigerians to rally behind the Armed Forces in the aftermath of a devastating terrorist attack in Borno State that claimed the lives of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and several soldiers. Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, made this appeal while responding to the tragic incident in Benisheikh, describing it as a poignant reminder of the daily sacrifices made by troops on the frontlines of Nigeria's security challenges.
Details of the Attack and Legislative Response
Brigadier General Braimah and his fellow soldiers were killed when insurgents launched an assault on a military base in Nigeria's North-East region, an area that has endured prolonged violence from extremist groups. Agbese emphasized that this loss highlights the critical need to bolster national support for the military, underscoring that the fight against terrorism and banditry demands a unified and collective commitment from all citizens.
"The National Assembly stands firmly with our armed forces at this difficult time. We urge all Nigerians to unite behind them as they continue to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nation," Agbese stated. He pointed out that Nigeria is currently facing complex and evolving security threats, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, particularly prevalent in the northern parts of the country.
Commitment to Legislative Support and Oversight
The lawmaker affirmed that the 10th National Assembly is dedicated to providing robust legislative backing to enhance the operational capacity of the military and other security agencies. This commitment involves ensuring adequate funding, improving troop welfare, and strengthening intelligence and surveillance systems to effectively counter security threats. Agbese also assured that lawmakers would intensify oversight of defence spending to guarantee transparency and ensure that allocated resources are utilized efficiently.
He commended the courage and resilience of troops who persistently confront insurgents despite mounting risks, describing them as patriots whose sacrifices must never be taken for granted. The Benisheikh attack is part of a growing pattern of assaults on military formations in the North-East, with insurgent groups intensifying their operations in recent months.
Role of Citizens in Combating Insecurity
Agbese stressed that beyond government efforts, citizens play a vital role in tackling insecurity by providing timely and credible information to security agencies. "The battle against terrorism is not for the military alone. It requires the active support and cooperation of all Nigerians," he added. He expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration between the legislature, executive, and the Armed Forces, Nigeria will overcome its current security challenges and restore lasting peace.
The lawmaker extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, noting that their sacrifice will remain a symbol of courage and national service. This call to action underscores the National Assembly's resolve to foster a united front against the persistent threats to Nigeria's security landscape.
