Senator Natasha Appeals to Former PDP Lawmakers to Rejoin Party
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has made a passionate appeal to her colleagues who have abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), urging them to return to their former political home before the crucial 2027 general elections. The senator expressed unwavering confidence that the PDP is experiencing a significant resurgence and is positioned to reclaim its former strength in Nigerian politics.
Confidence in PDP's Revival
Speaking at the inauguration of the PDP national convention committee organized by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike's faction in Abuja on Saturday, March 21, Senator Natasha emphasized that the party's internal crises are being resolved. She stated that the PDP is "back and better" and actively "coming back to life," creating an opportune moment for defectors to reconsider their positions.
The senator revealed concerning statistics about the party's representation in the National Assembly, noting that the PDP's senatorial strength has dramatically declined from 37 senators to merely 6. She attributed this mass exodus primarily to the leadership conflicts that have plagued the party in recent years, but insisted that these issues are being effectively addressed.
Warning About APC's Promises
In her direct message to former PDP members now in the APC, Senator Natasha delivered a stark warning: "Trust me, it's not greener on the other side." She challenged the assumption that defectors would automatically secure political advantages within the ruling party, suggesting that many are discovering the reality doesn't match their expectations.
"Many of them are concerned about the chances of getting an automatic ticket in the APC," she acknowledged, but maintained that returning to the PDP would ultimately prove more beneficial for their political careers and principles.
Nigerian Public Reactions
The senator's call has sparked diverse reactions across Nigeria's political landscape:
- Bunny questioned the consistency of the message, noting the apparent contradiction in Natasha aligning with Wike's faction while criticizing the APC government where Wike serves as FCT Minister.
- Amaka Ike praised the senator's stance, stating: "Politics isn't about greener grass, it's about discipline and loyalty. When politicians jump from PDP to APC chasing comfort, it exposes the real problem: no ideology, just survival."
- Kemo expressed broader frustration with Nigerian politics, commenting that party switching has become routine and that citizens care more about tangible results than party loyalty.
- Queen cpoke emphasized the value of political consistency, suggesting that remaining true to one's party and its foundational values often proves the more honorable path.
Looking Toward 2027
Senator Natasha concluded her remarks with optimistic projections for the PDP's future, expressing hope that the party would not only regain its majority in both chambers of the National Assembly but also secure the presidency in the 2027 elections. Her appeal represents a strategic effort to consolidate the party's rebuilding process by welcoming back experienced lawmakers who previously contributed to the PDP's successes.
The political landscape continues to evolve as both major parties position themselves for the upcoming electoral cycle, with defection and realignment remaining central features of Nigeria's dynamic democracy.
