Senate Leader Announces National Assembly Progress on State Police Creation

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has confirmed that the National Assembly is actively working on the creation of a decentralised police force, aimed at addressing Nigeria's security challenges while preventing potential abuse by the political class.

In a statement released to celebrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 74th birthday, Bamidele, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, emphasised the parliament's commitment to developing a framework for a decentralised police model.

This model is designed to serve the interests of all Nigerians, regardless of their social or economic status, and reflects the country's federal character to better protect lives and property across the Federation.

Support from President Tinubu and Stakeholders

Bamidele highlighted that key stakeholders have advocated for this decentralised approach in response to ongoing security issues, with President Tinubu openly supporting the initiative.

He noted that the Nigeria Police Force has already submitted a comprehensive 75-page framework to Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, for legislative consideration, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches.

The Senate Leader praised Tinubu for fostering synergy with the National Assembly to combat insecurity, stating that the President is exploring innovative solutions beyond traditional methods to tackle extremism, terrorism, and armed attacks.

Framework Details and Accountability Measures

According to Bamidele, the proposed decentralised police model aims to devolve policing powers to sub-national authorities, ensuring effective governance even in remote areas.

The framework under consideration will include robust accountability mechanisms to prevent power abuse by the political class, reinforce justice administration, discourage impunity, and safeguard fundamental human rights.

Bamidele assured Nigerians that the model will be anchored in global best practices, with a focus on transparency and efficiency.

Celebrating President Tinubu's Contributions

In his statement, Bamidele also celebrated President Tinubu's achievements, commending his dedication to Nigeria's prosperity and security initiatives.

He asserted that Tinubu has demonstrated significant allegiance, love, and sacrifice for the collective well-being of Nigerians, reinforcing the shared conviction between the Presidency and National Assembly in securing the nation.
