The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant for Kwara South, Engr. Sola Ajimati, has called for a more people-oriented legislature to drive sustainable development in Nigeria. In an interview with The Guardian, Ajimati, who is contesting the 2027 election under the 'It's Youth O'Clock Movement' (IYOM), shared his vision for youth empowerment, security, and grassroots development.
Why the Senate?
Ajimati explained that he is not entering politics for titles or fame but brings capacity, exposure, and practical experience in leadership, engineering, and youth development. He believes the Senate offers a broader platform to attract opportunities and influence policies for Kwara South.
On Consensus and Incumbent
Regarding the APC's consensus arrangement, Ajimati stressed that consensus should reflect competence and acceptability. He respects the incumbent but aims to offer grassroots-driven, youth-focused, technology-oriented leadership, prioritizing youth empowerment, ICT, education, and security.
Assessment of Legislature Since 1999
Ajimati noted that while Nigeria's democracy has grown, many citizens feel disconnected from their representatives due to insufficient grassroots impact. He called for a legislature that prioritizes accountability, inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development.
Plans for the Senate
He plans to establish an open, active Senate office focused on youth employment, vocational development, digital innovation, rural infrastructure, community security, women empowerment, and education. He also aims to attract private investments and international opportunities to Kwara South.
On APC Governorship Ticket
Ajimati advised the APC to prioritize fairness, unity, competence, and electability in selecting its governorship candidate, ensuring every zone is respected and party unity is strengthened.
Challenges Ahead
He identified rebuilding public trust after unfulfilled promises, insecurity, and unemployment as major challenges. His mission centers on community security, youth empowerment, and economic opportunities.
Difference from Incumbent
Ajimati intends to focus on direct empowerment, regular constituency engagement, skills acquisition, innovation hubs, ICT-driven education, and youth inclusion, moving beyond motions and bills.
Campaign on APC Achievements
He will campaign on President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, including economic reforms, infrastructure, student loans, local government autonomy, and youth opportunities, building on APC's achievements in Kwara State.
It's Youth O'Clock Movement
The movement signifies a generational shift, urging young people to take responsibility and shape the future. It promotes inclusion, empowerment, and active participation in leadership and policymaking.
