NNPP Reacts to ADC Leadership Crisis, Faults Kwankwaso
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has publicly attributed the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the actions of its former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso. In a strongly worded statement issued in Lagos, the party's National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, detailed the allegations following recent developments that have shaken the opposition party's structure.
INEC's Withdrawal of Recognition
This controversy erupted after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the withdrawal of recognition from the ADC leadership, including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who served as chairman and secretary respectively. INEC cited a Court of Appeal order directing the maintenance of the status quo within the party, a move that has sparked widespread political debate and internal strife.
NNPP's Allegations Against Kwankwaso
Reacting to this development, the NNPP stated that the situation within the ADC was not unexpected. The party alleged that the crisis stems directly from internal political decisions linked to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and some of his close associates. According to the NNPP, Kwankwaso and a former NNPP chieftain, Buba Galadima, attempted to take control of the NNPP's organizational structure prior to the 2023 general elections. The party described their actions as responsible for lingering political disputes that have now spilled over into the ADC.
The statement further elaborated that the NNPP's logo and party identity were altered without the consent of its leadership after members of the Kwankwasiyya movement joined the party ahead of the 2023 elections. While Kwankwaso contested the presidential election on the NNPP platform, some of his political allies secured significant elective positions, including the governorship of Kano State and seats in both the National and State Assemblies.
ADC's Admission of Kwankwaso and Supporters
The NNPP argued that the challenges currently confronting the ADC followed its decision to admit Kwankwaso and his supporters without first resolving prior disagreements with the NNPP leadership. This move, according to the party, has exacerbated existing tensions and led to the current leadership impasse. The NNPP also dismissed suggestions that either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or INEC was responsible for the ADC's internal difficulties, insisting instead that the issues are self-inflicted and rooted in poor political judgment.
Call for Reconciliation and Forgiveness
In a bid to foster political stability, the NNPP urged the ADC leadership to encourage robust reconciliation efforts. The party called on Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima to seek forgiveness from NNPP members and its leadership to restore political harmony. This appeal highlights the NNPP's desire to move beyond past conflicts and work towards a more cohesive opposition framework in Nigeria's political landscape.
The NNPP's statement underscores the complex interplay of personal ambitions, party loyalties, and structural changes that continue to shape Nigeria's opposition politics. As the ADC grapples with its leadership crisis, the call for reconciliation serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and unity in navigating the country's democratic processes.
