Northern Elders Forum Condemns Calls for US Military Intervention in Nigeria
Northern Elders Reject US Military Intervention in Nigeria

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has issued a strong condemnation of recent calls urging the United States to carry out a military intervention in Nigeria. The group described the suggestion as both reckless and a threat to national stability.

Forum's Firm Stance Against External Intervention

In a communiqué released on 7 December 2025, following its annual meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, the political group stated that such agitation was not only ridiculous but could also promote anarchy. The NEF emphasized that Nigeria is actively working to solve its security problems and that external military interference would be counterproductive.

Yusuf Abubakar, the National Coordinator of the forum, was unequivocal in his criticism. He stated that comments advocating for foreign military action, regardless of who makes them, are unacceptable. He argued they demonstrate a lack of patriotism and could create unnecessary tension within the country.

Call for Unity and Security Focus

The elders used the opportunity to call on the nation's political leadership, particularly governors from the northern region, to present a united front. They urged these leaders to focus on tackling the twin challenges of insecurity and poverty instead of politicizing the issues for personal or partisan gain.

The forum also pointedly addressed a specific individual, calling on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate former Senator Kabiru Marafa for his comments on the matter. The NEF noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu, along with the nation's security agencies, is already implementing measures to combat the security threats facing the country.

Reaffirming National Sovereignty

The strong rebuke from the Northern Elders Forum underscores a deep-seated commitment to national sovereignty. The group's message is clear: solutions to Nigeria's internal challenges must be homegrown and led by Nigerians. They view any invitation for foreign military forces as a harmful act that could undermine national cohesion and the ongoing efforts of the country's own security apparatus.
