Former President Obasanjo Firmly Denies Baseless Death Rumors Circulating Online
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has categorically dismissed as "baseless and malicious" the rumors of his death that have been spreading across social media platforms. The elder statesman, who is set to celebrate his 89th birthday, addressed these false claims during his birthday colloquium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo Condemns "Never-Do-Well" Individuals Behind Fake Article
Obasanjo expressed strong disapproval of those responsible for creating and disseminating a fabricated article that falsely announced his death. The article, which circulated without attribution, presented Obasanjo as an 84-year-old man reflecting on his life in what was described as "final memoirs"—a claim that directly contradicts reality since Obasanjo turns 89 on March 5, 2026.
"For my final note in this address, I want to point your attention to the work of some never-do-well," Obasanjo stated emphatically. "They publish and circulate a fake paper credited to me, claiming that I am writing and giving notice of my death, pafuka. That is their wish and surely not God's wish for me."
Divine Assurance of Longevity and Purpose
The former president revealed that he has received divine assurance regarding his continued life and purpose. "God has assured me that He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it," Obasanjo declared. He added that those wishing for his demise "are going to be dealt with by God Himself," concluding with the affirmation: "I dey kampe as usual. God bless."
Social Media Verification and Family Notification
Obasanjo disclosed that he first learned about the death rumors through an ally who alerted him to the circulating misinformation. The former president then personally checked social media to verify these claims, after which he had to inform his family and friends about the false reports. He expressed bewilderment at why anyone would wish him dead, particularly as he approaches his 89th birthday celebration.
This incident follows previous occasions where Obasanjo has had to refute similar rumors about his health and mortality. The former president has maintained an active public presence despite his advanced age, continuing to participate in national discourse and developmental projects across Nigeria.
Broader Context of Misinformation in Nigerian Media
The circulation of false death announcements about prominent Nigerian figures has become an unfortunate trend in recent years, with several high-profile individuals having to publicly deny similar rumors. This particular incident involving Obasanjo highlights the challenges of misinformation in the digital age, especially concerning elderly statesmen who remain influential in national affairs.
Obasanjo's strong rebuttal serves as both a personal affirmation of his vitality and a broader condemnation of those who spread false information for unknown motives. As Nigeria's former head of state and a respected elder statesman, his words carry significant weight in addressing this concerning trend of digital misinformation targeting public figures.
