Reno Omokri Defends Tinubu's Unfulfilled Power Promise, Claims Presidential Ignorance
Former presidential media aide Reno Omokri has come to the defense of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the administration's failure to deliver on the campaign promise of providing Nigerians with 24-hour electricity supply. During a recent television appearance, Omokri argued that Tinubu made this commitment without proper understanding of Nigeria's complex power sector realities.
Television Interview Reveals Surprising Defense
While appearing on Channels Television on March 5, 2026, Omokri was questioned by host Seun Okinbaloye about whether Nigerians should hold President Tinubu accountable for his explicit campaign pledge. The former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan initially denied awareness of such a promise before reluctantly acknowledging its existence.
"When he said that, maybe he was contesting, and didn't know what was in government," Omokri stated during the interview. "The Nigerian power sector has been privatized, and there's very little the president can do."
Privatization Argument as Primary Defense
Omokri elaborated that President Tinubu's promise originated from an outsider's perspective in federal politics, suggesting the President would have understood the limitations of his office had he known about the extensive privatization of Nigeria's electricity infrastructure. The former media aide emphasized that only the transmission process remains under government control, which he argued should also be privatized.
This defense comes despite Tinubu's clear 2022 declaration during the "Lunch With Tinubu Business Summit" where he told Nigeria's business community: "If I don't give you constant electricity for 4 Years, don't vote for me when I come back for 2nd Term. By all means necessary, you must have electricity."
Political Transformation and Current Context
Reno Omokri's defense represents a significant political transformation. Previously known as a staunch critic of Tinubu ahead of the 2023 elections, Omokri has since become one of the President's most vocal advocates. His support recently earned him a nomination for an ambassadorial position within the Tinubu administration.
However, this latest defense may face skepticism from Nigerians experiencing worsening power conditions. The Nigerian Independent Systems Operator has attributed the decline in electricity supply to massive gas shortages, with only 43% of required gas reaching thermal generating plants. This situation threatens imminent shutdowns of power generation facilities across the country.
Growing Public Discontent and Political Implications
As power supply continues to deteriorate nationwide, Nigerians are increasingly recalling Tinubu's specific campaign promises regarding electricity. The administration, including Power Minister Bayo Adelabu, has yet to address the nation comprehensively about the worsening power situation.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Tinubu's unfulfilled electricity promises are likely to become a significant political issue. Omokri's defense, while attempting to shield the President from accountability, highlights the growing gap between campaign rhetoric and governance reality in Nigeria's power sector.
The situation underscores the complex challenges facing Nigeria's electricity infrastructure, where privatization has created limitations on governmental intervention despite campaign promises suggesting otherwise. As citizens endure extended blackouts and unreliable power, the political consequences of these unfulfilled commitments remain to be seen in the coming electoral cycle.
