Onoh Dismisses Allegations of External Interference in Enugu Politics

Denge Josef Onoh, the former South-East spokesman to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chairman of the Forum of Former Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, has responded to reports of alleged external political interference in Enugu State. In a statement issued to journalists in Abuja, Onoh addressed claims involving Chief Uche Nnaji and his sponsors, dismissing them as baseless.

Claims of Alliance Dismissed as Futile Fantasy

Onoh stated that his attention was drawn to reports alleging external interference, particularly claims of a supposed alliance between Minister Nyesom Wike and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to install Chief Uche Nnaji as the next governor of Enugu State in 2027. He described these claims as nothing but a futile fantasy, a dangerous miscalculation, and a complete waste of time, energy, and resources. Onoh emphasised that Enugu State is distinct from other regions, asserting that it is not a no man's land where outsiders can impose candidates through political manoeuvring.

Enugu's Sovereignty and Leadership Determination

He stressed that the people of Enugu State would determine their leadership, insisting that no external endorsement could unseat a performing governor like Dr Peter Mbah. Even if both Nyesom Wike, who I respect to a reasonable extent, and Hope Uzodimma allegedly combine their forces and throw their full weight behind Uche Nnaji, it would still amount to zero, Onoh said. He added that external forces should steer clear and respect the sovereignty of the state's politics, warning that any attempt to destabilise Enugu would be met with resistance.

Warning Against Destabilisation and Direct Address to Nnaji

Onoh issued a stern warning, stating, Any attempt to set fire in Enugu State will be met with equal measure — we will return the favour without hesitation. He cautioned that if chaos were ignited, the consequences would be felt by the instigators. Addressing Chief Uche Nnaji directly, Onoh described him as my brother but advised that pursuing the governorship ambition at this time would be counterproductive. Running for Governor of Enugu State at this time is a colossal waste of time, he said, noting it would only bring unnecessary division and embarrassment.

Historical Context and Commitment to Stability

Reflecting on Enugu's political heritage, Onoh recalled the role played by founding fathers, including his late father, Chief C.C. Onoh, in establishing the state's political foundation. He stressed that the current generation would not allow external forces to destabilise it. Onoh listed prominent Enugu leaders, such as Senator Jim Nwobodo, Senator Ken Nnamani, Sullivan Chime, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, alongside members of the political class, as stakeholders committed to preserving the state's stability.

Onoh's Political Contributions and Regional Campaigns

Onoh also reflected on his role as a former presidential spokesman in the South-East, highlighting his efforts in campaigning for President Tinubu during challenging times. As the former South-East spokesman to Mr President, I walked the regional terrain during its most dangerous and security-threatening times campaigning for your victory, he said. He noted that he was a lone voice in the region promoting Tinubu's candidacy when it was considered taboo, and today, the results of his labour are evident in the growing support for the president in the South-East.
