The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo in Osun State has officially announced the passing of their monarch, Oba Adegboyega Famodun, who served as the 30th Owa of Igbajo and previously chaired the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Monarch's Final Days and Family Confirmation
According to a statement released by Prince Adekunle Famodun on behalf of the royal family, the traditional ruler died on Friday, November 28, 2025, following a short illness. The family confirmed the monarch was 67 years old at the time of his passing and is survived by his wife and children.
The announcement came on Sunday after the statement was obtained in Osogbo, the state capital, bringing official confirmation to circulating reports about the monarch's deteriorating health condition.
Controversial Reign and Legal Battles
Oba Famodun's journey to the throne was marked by significant political and legal challenges. He was initially installed and presented with the staff of office on November 24, 2022 by the former Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola.
However, his position faced serious challenges when Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration issued a white paper questioning his legitimacy. The monarch's reign saw a dramatic turn when the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025, following legal proceedings that drew widespread attention across the state.
The controversy deepened on March 12, 2024, when the Osun State Government approved the appointment of Prince Ademola Makinde as the new Owa of Igbajo, effectively replacing Famodun. This move was announced by the Commissioner for Local Government and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi.
Political Background and Lasting Legacy
Before ascending the traditional throne, Oba Famodun had built a significant political career, having served as the chairman of the Osun State chapter of the APC. His political background often placed him at the center of controversies surrounding his traditional role.
The Osun APC, under the leadership of Chairman Tajudeen Lawal, consistently defended Famodun's position, arguing that the stool remained subject to pending lawsuits and challenging the state government's decisions regarding the traditional institution.
Despite the political and legal turbulence, the royal family remembered Oba Famodun as a unifying force who worked tirelessly to bring peace and development to Igbajoland. In their official statement, they highlighted his exceptional wisdom and dedication to community progress.
The family emphasized that his leadership left an indelible mark on the community, creating a legacy that would inspire future generations. They noted his peaceful nature and relentless efforts in promoting understanding among the people of Igbajo, ensuring his reign would be remembered for its positive impact on community development.
The passing of Oba Adegboyega Famodun marks the end of an era for Igbajo community, leaving behind a complex legacy intertwined with traditional leadership, political influence, and legal battles that defined his relatively short but impactful reign as the 30th Owa of Igbajo.
