PDP Issues Stern Warning to INEC and National Institutions Over Partisanship Concerns
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has voiced significant concerns regarding what it perceives as escalating threats to Nigeria's democratic framework. In a strongly worded press statement released on Wednesday, the opposition party cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other pivotal national institutions against engaging in actions that could potentially destabilize the country's political environment.
Allegations of Orchestrated Manipulation
Through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP alleged that recent political maneuvers indicate clear orchestrations and manipulation aimed at diminishing the strength of opposition parties in anticipation of upcoming elections. The party described the current political atmosphere as being unnecessarily raised to near-fever levels, drawing a parallel to the human body's response to sustained pressure, suggesting that society might either adapt or face a breakdown under such strain.
Criticism of Ruling Party and Democratic Erosion
Accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of pursuing electoral victories at all costs, the PDP warned that such ambitions risk eroding foundational democratic norms and institutions. The statement emphasized that no boundary is respected, and nothing is too much to sacrifice, including the potential derailment of democracy, truncation of the republic, and destruction of Nigeria itself.
Concerns Over Neutral Institutions
Expressing deep unease, the PDP highlighted that institutions traditionally viewed as neutral arbiters, such as the judiciary and INEC, are increasingly being drawn into partisan conflicts. Specifically, the party criticized INEC's recent stance on the derecognition of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by David Mark, labeling the commission's interpretation of court judgments as troubling and indicative of ulterior motives.
Questioning INEC's Monitoring Activities
While acknowledging that INEC's political party monitoring activities fall within its statutory mandate, the PDP questioned the timing of these actions, cautioning that they could lead to the deregistration of opposition parties. Such a move, the party argued, would further weaken Nigeria's democratic fabric and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
Call for Restraint and National Unity
In response to these concerns, the PDP urged INEC and other national institutions to resist partisan pressures and prioritize the broader interests of the country. The statement called for a country-first approach that transcends political divisions, stressing that this is a critical moment in Nigeria's democratic journey where the polity's fragility is being tested. The party appealed for restraint and unity, expressing hope that both Nigeria and its democracy will endure the present challenges and emerge stronger.
