Peter Obi Visits Abubakar Malami in Abuja Following His Release from Custody
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, made a significant visit on Tuesday to the residence of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in Abuja, the nation's capital. This visit occurred just 24 hours after Malami was released from custody, having been granted bail by the Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory.
Accompanied by ADC Chieftains
Obi was not alone during this visit; he was accompanied by other prominent chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This move underscores a show of solidarity and support for Malami, who has recently faced legal challenges. Last week, Obi had publicly expressed deep concern over the arrests and ongoing detention of key ADC leaders, including Malami and former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai. In a statement, Obi lamented the timing of these arrests and urged the current administration to resolve the situation promptly.
Public Announcement via Social Media
The visit was publicly announced by ADC Vanguard, a support group of the ADC, which posted a picture of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter). The post read: "BREAKING: HE Peter Obi visits Abubakar Malami SAN to express support over his recent experiences with the EFCC, DSS, and subsequent bail by the Federal High Court FCT." This social media update brought widespread attention to the event, highlighting the political implications of such a visit.
Legal Background of Malami's Cases
Abubakar Malami's release comes after a complex legal battle involving multiple charges. On February 27, a federal high court in Abuja granted bail to Malami and his son, Abdulaziz, in the sum of N200 million each. They face allegations related to terrorism offences, including terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms. The charges stem from accusations by the Department of State Services (DSS), which claimed that Malami, while in office, refused to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case files were forwarded to his office.
According to the charge sheet, Malami is alleged to have "knowingly abetted terrorism financing" by declining to initiate prosecution against suspects, a violation of section 26(2) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. This case adds to his legal troubles, as he is also standing trial on separate money laundering charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC arraigned Malami, his son, and his wife over allegations of money laundering amounting to N8,713,923,759.49.
Arrest and Custody Details
Malami's arrest occurred on January 19, when DSS operatives detained him in front of the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. This arrest followed his release in a case filed by the EFCC, indicating a coordinated effort by multiple security agencies. The former AGF is now navigating two separate criminal charges, making his legal situation particularly precarious and politically charged.
Political Implications and Solidarity
Peter Obi's visit to Malami is seen as a gesture of political solidarity, especially given Obi's previous statements criticizing the arrests of ADC leaders. This action may signal a strengthening of alliances or a unified front against perceived injustices. The presence of ADC chieftains during the visit further emphasizes the collective support within opposition circles.
As the legal proceedings continue, this visit highlights the ongoing tensions between political figures and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria. It raises questions about the intersection of politics, justice, and security in the country's current administration.
