Rapper Balendra Shah Wins Landslide Victory to Become Nepal's New Prime Minister
In a stunning political upset, 35-year-old rapper Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, is poised to become Nepal's next prime minister following an unprecedented electoral victory. His party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), secured a rare landslide majority in the first election since youth-led protests that resulted in dozens of fatalities and the toppling of the former government.
A Victory for Hope and Change
Ramesh Paudyal, a senior RSP leader, hailed the outcome as "the victory of hope and change" and described it as "the most beautiful endorsement of the gen Z movement." He emphasized that the true tribute to the gen Z martyrs would be expressed through the daily work of the government led by Balendra Shah. The election results clearly reflected public anger toward the political old guard, with veteran parties and their leaders losing significant numbers of seats.
Rise of a New Political Force
The RSP, formed just three years ago by a former TV executive, achieved a rare outright majority in what was considered one of the most significant and gripping elections in years. The contest pitted long-dominant political heavyweights against a younger generation committed to ending corruption and ushering in a fresh start for Nepal.
Despite his relative newcomer status in politics, Shah emerged as the frontrunner, running a dynamic campaign that resonated with a widespread hunger for change, particularly among young Nepalis. An engineer by training, Shah first gained fame as a rapper whose tracks addressed critical issues such as poverty, unemployment, and corruption.
From Mayor to National Prominence
In 2022, Shah transitioned to public office, running independently to become the mayor of Kathmandu. After winning a strong majority, he embarked on the monumental task of cleaning up the city, which included removing unauthorized buildings and addressing waste management problems.
His national prominence soared during the youth uprising in September of last year. Protests erupted suddenly, initially sparked by a social media ban but fueled by broader frustrations over limited opportunities. The government responded with force, resulting in the deaths of 19 protesters. The unrest escalated into wider violence and arson attacks, leading to 70 fatalities and ultimately forcing the resignation of the government led by four-time prime minister KP Sharma Oli and his veteran Communist party.
Strategic Patience and Overwhelming Triumph
The rapid collapse of the government left many in the movement in shock. While Shah was the preferred choice of gen Z protest leaders to serve as interim prime minister, he declined the offer, opting instead to wait for formal elections held on March 5. Shah contested directly against 74-year-old KP Sharma Oli, and his overwhelming victory was officially declared on the night of March 7, with Shah securing 68,348 votes compared to Oli's 18,724.
In conceding defeat, former prime minister Oli extended his "heartfelt best wishes" to Shah, hoping for an "uninterrupted five-year term." Upon arriving to collect his election certificate, Shah emerged from the sunroof of his vehicle wearing his signature dark sunglasses and a black blazer, holding up a banner that read: "Congratulations to all of you, this is your victory."
Jubilation and High Expectations
The victory sparked widespread jubilation among supporters. Aditya Karna, a 23-year-old, expressed that "one of the main factors behind the gen Z movement, KP Oli, has been defeated. It feels like justice has been delivered to the martyrs." He added, "Now there is an expectation that Balen will lead the country toward a better future."
This historic win marks a pivotal generational shift in Nepalese politics, as a young rapper-turned-politician prepares to steer the nation toward new horizons, backed by a mandate for transformative change.
