Rivers Assembly Approves Five Commissioner Nominees, Turns Down Four

The Rivers State House of Assembly has concluded a rigorous screening process for nine commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, resulting in the confirmation of five individuals and the rejection of four others. This decisive action was taken during a televised plenary session where lawmakers evaluated the nominees based on their qualifications and preparedness to serve the state.

Lawmakers Cite Poor Performance and Controversies for Rejections

During the proceedings, the Assembly highlighted that the four rejected nominees were turned down due to what was described as their poor performance and the controversies surrounding their documentation. The lawmakers expressed concerns that these individuals failed to demonstrate adequate readiness or suitability for the roles they were nominated to fill within the Rivers State Executive Council.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule addressed the Assembly, stating, "Distinguished colleagues, we have nine nominees forwarded to this Assembly by the governor. At the end of the screening exercise, the House has confirmed five of them. And four of them the House has chosen to take a deep breath given their poor performance and controversies surrounding either their documents, and they have not been able to show this august assembly that they are indeed prepared to serve Rivers State or that they are able. And we feel that they are not square pegs in square holes for the offices that they intend to occupy."

Confirmed and Rejected Nominees Listed

The commissioner nominees who received confirmation from the Assembly include Tonye Belgam, Prof. Temple Nwafor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth, and Amarigha Edward-Hart. These individuals were given a clean bill of health after the screening, indicating that they met the Assembly's standards for service.

In contrast, those whose nominations were rejected are Prof. Datonye Alasia, Barr. Tamuno Williams, Otonye Amachree, and Charity Deemua. The Assembly's decision to reject these nominees underscores the rigorous scrutiny applied to ensure that only qualified and controversy-free candidates are appointed to key government positions.

Next Steps and Communication with Governor

Following the screening, the lawmakers unanimously agreed that Speaker Martins Amaewhule should formally communicate the Assembly's resolution to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Speaker emphasized that this step is necessary to ensure that only the five confirmed nominees are inaugurated, aligning with the Assembly's rules and the best interests of Rivers State.

Speaker Amaewhule concluded, "On that note, distinguished colleagues, I thank you for your contributions. With your leave and in line with our rules, I will forward the resolution of this august assembly to the governor so that he can take necessary steps for the interest of Rivers State." This move aims to streamline the appointment process and uphold accountability in the state's governance.
