The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has responded to claims that he was asked to resign from his position. Sahara Reporters had alleged that the governor was facing a major political shake-up and had been asked to step down due to health reasons, paving the way for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, to complete the administration's tenure. The report further claimed that sources within the presidency, including President Bola Tinubu and his inner circle, were dissatisfied with the current leadership in Lagos and had initiated a transition plan.
Governor's Response
Reacting through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor described the report as entirely false. Akosile stated that no one has asked Sanwo-Olu to resign and labeled the story as fake news. He emphasized that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively performing his duties as the governor of Lagos State.
Akosile further noted that while Sahara Reporters has a history of publishing disinformation, the clarification was necessary to prevent the public from being misled. He advised the public to disregard the story entirely, stating, “We would ordinarily ignore such baseless reports, but the need to reassure Lagosians makes this response necessary.”
Background
This denial comes amid ongoing political dynamics in Lagos State, where leadership transitions have often sparked speculation. However, the governor's office has firmly rejected any notion of an impending resignation, urging citizens to focus on the administration's developmental agenda.
