Sanwo-Olu Endorses Hamzat as Successor for 2027

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election. The announcement was made on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, adding significant momentum to Hamzat's growing political support base ahead of the race.

Sanwo-Olu's Endorsement Strengthens Hamzat's Candidacy

Sanwo-Olu's backing comes amid a wave of endorsements for the deputy governor from political leaders and stakeholders across the state. These endorsements follow a series of consultative visits by Hamzat in recent weeks, during which he engaged with various party leaders and community representatives.

Broad Coalition of Support Emerges

Earlier, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, had publicly declared support for Hamzat's ambition. Obasa made the announcement while addressing leaders of the All Progressives Congress during a consultation meeting with party stakeholders. According to the Speaker, discussions on the 2027 governorship succession had already been held among key political actors during a recent visit to Abuja, with consensus emerging in favor of Hamzat. He noted that the meeting was convened to reaffirm that position and align party leaders behind the deputy governor.

Describing Hamzat as “our father and leader,” Obasa said party members were consolidating support for his emergence as the party’s standard-bearer in the next gubernatorial election.

Other prominent figures who have thrown their weight behind Hamzat include the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Senator representing Lagos East, Tokunbo Abiru; and former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. Their endorsements further signal a broadening coalition of support within the APC and Lagos political establishment, positioning Hamzat as a leading contender in the build-up to the 2027 election.
