Sanwo-Olu's Plantain Purchase Not Political Stunt, Aide Insists Amid Criticism
Wale Ajetunmobi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has strongly defended his principal's recent actions, which included buying roasted plantain, known locally as Boli, from a roadside trader in the Ajegunle area of the state. The governor was also observed engaging in conversations with students in the community, inquiring about their feelings regarding their school environment. These interactions, captured and shared widely on social media, have sparked a heated debate among netizens, with many labeling them as typical campaign strategies employed by Nigerian politicians as election periods approach.
Social Media Backlash and Accusations
On the platform X, formerly Twitter, users were quick to criticize Governor Sanwo-Olu's gestures. One user, @Samieking3, commented, "Campaign strategy that is already outdated, but we still let these clowns do as they like." Another, @AnderuOgbeni, questioned, "Why are all these politicians buying toasted plantain now? They'll either go to the local bucateria to eat!!! Old styles again??? E don cast." Further criticism came from @Obaskki, who noted, "When election time is near, nothing stops them from having a conversation with even a madman walking along the road," and @ChijiokeBr24 added, "Suddenly, he remembers them. The same old system, Nigerians keep falling for it. They only remember your existence when it's time to vote." These remarks reflect a broader skepticism among the public, who often view such acts as insincere political theatrics designed to garner votes.
Aide's Defense and Clarification
In response to the backlash, Ajetunmobi took to social media to assert that Sanwo-Olu's actions were genuine and not a political show. He wrote, "Yes, in 2026! How many of those people have opportunities to see the Governor face-to-face? A simple gesture of conversing with a resident shouldn't always be seen as a political show, more so when you know the actor is not contesting any election. Sanwo-Olu didn't do badly." This statement emphasizes the rarity of such direct interactions between a governor and ordinary citizens, suggesting that it should be appreciated rather than politicized. Ajetunmobi's defense highlights the governor's intent to connect with residents on a personal level, irrespective of electoral cycles.
The incident underscores the ongoing tension between political leaders and the electorate in Nigeria, where public gestures are often scrutinized for ulterior motives. As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how such interactions will impact public perception and political dynamics in Lagos State and beyond.
