Senator Ishaku Abbo Exposes Internal Betrayal in ADC Leadership Crisis
Senator Ishaku Abbo, representing Adamawa North, has publicly attributed the escalating leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to a combination of internal disagreements, outright betrayal, and alleged external interference from powerful political figures. The crisis reached a critical point after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced it would no longer recognize factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, citing a Court of Appeal judgment and ongoing litigation as key reasons for this decision.
Broken Agreements and Political Maneuvering
In a detailed statement shared on his Facebook page, Senator Abbo explained that the dispute originated after Nafiu Bala and members of the party's national working committee voluntarily stepped down to facilitate the emergence of a new leadership structure. Abbo provided a vivid account, stating, "If you check the picture below, the man sitting before me is Nafiu Bala. He was at the Yar’Adua Centre clapping and cheering as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola took over as national chairman and secretary respectively." This initial cooperation, however, quickly unraveled due to unfulfilled promises.
According to Abbo, a crucial agreement was made with the legacy party to allocate specific party positions across geopolitical zones, ensuring integration of existing members into the larger ADC framework. "The agreement made with the legacy party was to cede certain positions to them from each geopolitical zone so that they can be part of the larger ADC," he emphasized. Specifically, Bala was promised the position of national vice-chairman for the north-east as part of this arrangement.
Reneged Promises and Escalating Conflict
Senator Abbo alleged that the new leadership under David Mark reneged on this agreement, failing to honor the commitment to appoint Bala as national vice-chairman northeast. Instead, they installed Babachir David Lawal in the position, a move that sparked significant discontent. "During the formation of the David Mark-led NWC, the new leadership reneged on the earlier agreement to make Bala national vice chairman northeast and instead installed Babachir David Lawal in the position," Abbo stated clearly.
When Bala was offered an alternative role, he rejected it outright, leading to further tensions. Abbo claimed, "At this point, he started plotting how to bring the whole roof down," suggesting that Bala began actively working to undermine the party's stability. Additionally, Abbo pointed to external influences, alleging that unnamed political figures, including a serving governor and a former minister, are backing legal actions against the ADC, exacerbating the crisis.
Calls for Unity and Resolution
In his appeal for resolution, Senator Abbo called on Nafiu Bala to withdraw the ongoing court cases and collaborate towards party unity. He also urged INEC to reconsider its position, warning that the persistent internal conflict could have far-reaching consequences if left unresolved. "The ongoing situation could have broader consequences if not resolved," he cautioned, highlighting the potential impact on the party's electoral prospects and overall political stability.
