Sheikh Umar Denies DSS Detention Claims, Clarifies He Was Only Questioned
Religious leader Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has firmly dismissed allegations that he was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), countering claims made by former presidential candidate Peter Obi. In a recent video posted on social media, Sheikh Umar clarified that he was merely invited by the DSS for questioning and was never held in custody, emphasizing his safety and well-being after the encounter.
Peter Obi's Allegations and Concerns
Peter Obi, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had asserted that Sheikh Umar was arrested shortly after Obi visited him in Kaduna. Obi expressed deep concern over this alleged incident, stating, "This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened, and where citizens and perceived political opponents face harassment and unnecessary persecution." He called on authorities to uphold democratic principles, warning that suppression of dissent cannot stand in a democratic society.
Sheikh Umar's Clarification and Appeal
In response, Sheikh Umar addressed the public to correct what he termed a false report. He said, "I come today to correct a false report being circulated in some quarters. I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning. I cooperated fully, and I was released. I am free, safe and well." He urged his supporters and citizens of Kaduna State to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, advising against taking the law into their own hands or creating disorder.
Sheikh Umar also touched on the matter of former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, calling for patience and due process. He encouraged those dissatisfied with the current system to engage in the democratic process by registering and voting for better leadership when the opportunity arises.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria's political landscape, with differing narratives emerging from key figures. While Peter Obi's statements reflect broader concerns about democratic freedoms, Sheikh Umar's clarification aims to dispel rumors and promote stability. The situation underscores the importance of accurate information and peaceful dialogue in addressing political disputes.
