Shettima Updates Tinubu on Maiduguri Security Assessment After Bombings
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Lagos yesterday to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security situation in Maiduguri, following a series of bomb explosions in the city. This visit also includes leading serving governors on a Sallah homage to the President, marking a significant inter-governmental engagement.
On-the-Spot Assessment and Federal Response
Shettima's briefing stems from his recent trip to Maiduguri, undertaken at the President's request, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment after multiple bomb blasts rocked the area. During his condolence visit, he engaged with affected families, community leaders, and relevant authorities to gather firsthand insights.
The Vice President is expected to provide a detailed update to Tinubu on these findings, including discussions on strengthening collaboration between government levels to address emerging security threats and enhance rapid response mechanisms nationwide. In Maiduguri, Shettima had previously assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would confront the perpetrators of the bombings decisively.
Peter Obi Condemns Terrorist Influence as National Emergency
Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced strong criticism over the security crisis, stating that Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terrorists. In a post on his verified X handle, Obi lamented what he described as a breakdown of governance and humanity.
Reacting to the wave of insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, Obi highlighted reports of terrorists issuing orders for citizens to flee their ancestral homes without consequences, calling it heartbreaking and unacceptable. He argued that this situation indicates non-state actors have assumed state authority in parts of the country, dictating living conditions.
"What we are witnessing in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, and indeed across our country, is tragic. It reflects a complete breakdown of governance and humanity," Obi stated. "This is not how a nation should function. How did we get to a point where Nigerians are taking instructions from terrorists instead of their government?"
He emphasized that this issue transcends mere security concerns, labeling it a national emergency. "I have consistently maintained that no nation can progress when its people live in fear. The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror," he concluded.
The meeting between Shettima and Tinubu is also aimed at felicitating the President on Eid-el-Fitr, underscoring the dual focus on ceremonial duties and critical security discussions amid ongoing challenges.
