Vice President Shettima Heads to Freetown for ECOWAS Summit
Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The summit is scheduled to take place on July 19, 2026, at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre.
Key Focus Areas of the Summit
The summit is expected to address critical policy decisions, strategic resolutions, and reaffirm the collective commitment of West African leaders to peace, democracy, economic growth, and regional integration. As part of ECOWAS mid-year statutory meetings, the gathering brings together heads of state, ministers, senior officials, and regional institutions to advance shared priorities in security, democratic governance, economic integration, trade, infrastructure, and sustainable development.
Shettima's Role and Return
Vice President Shettima will join other political and business leaders from across West Africa and beyond during the one-day session. According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will return to Abuja at the conclusion of his engagement in Sierra Leone.
