South-West Pensioners Demand Urgent Review of Minimum Wage and Pension

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the South-West region has issued a strong call for the Federal Government to revisit and increase the current minimum wage and pension. This appeal aims to alleviate the severe economic hardship faced by retirees, as highlighted during the union's bi-monthly meeting hosted by the Ogun State branch in Abeokuta.

Renegotiation and Support for Labour Unions

In response to the soaring costs of food and living conditions, the pensioners have urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to initiate renegotiation processes for a new minimum wage and pension. Dr Olusegun Abatan, the Public Relations Officer of NUP South-West Zone, emphasized that it is high time for the government to address these issues. He stated that pensioners are ready to support the NLC and TUC in their efforts, calling on the Federal Government to collaborate with these unions to fine-tune strategies for implementation.

Legal Action and Electoral Mobilization

The pensioners have vowed to take legal action against any South-West governor who fails to pay outstanding gratuities dating back to 2011 before seeking re-election or leaving office. They also encouraged their members to collect and use their Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs) to vote out such governors in the upcoming 2027 elections, particularly those seeking a second term without addressing these debts.

Praise for Pensioner-Friendly Governors

During the meeting, Dr Abatan commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for their pensioner-friendly policies. However, he highlighted ongoing issues, such as the unfulfilled approval of Consequential Adjustments of Pensions in line with a 2019 Federal Government circular, as disclosed by NUP South-West Zone Chairman Waidi Oloyede.

The union's demands underscore the growing frustration among retirees over economic challenges and unpaid benefits, urging immediate government action to improve their welfare.
