Sultan's Visit to Olubadan Strengthens Interfaith Relations

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has publicly recognized the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, as a national leader whose conduct demonstrates strong commitment to national unity and religious harmony. This significant acknowledgment came during a courtesy visit by the Sultan and his delegation to the Olubadan Palace at Oke Aremo in Ibadan on November 19, 2025.

Military and Diplomatic Background Shapes Approach

Oba Ladoja highlighted that the Sultan's diverse background as a military officer, diplomat, and religious leader has significantly influenced his approach to interfaith relations. The monarch emphasized that the Sultan's long-standing connections with Ibadan have contributed to his understanding of Nigeria's complex religious landscape.

"His tolerance and restraint remain a model for religious figures seeking to prevent crises in the country," stated Oba Ladoja through his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Olugbemiga. The Olubadan particularly noted that these qualities make the Sultan an exemplary figure for other religious leaders across Nigeria.

University of Ibadan Milestone Celebrated

The Olubadan also expressed gratitude for the Sultan's role in the recent appointment of Prof. Kayode Adebowale as the first Vice-Chancellor of Ibadan origin since the university's establishment in 1948. As Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, the Sultan's contribution to this historic appointment was acknowledged as significant progress for the institution and the local community.

During his remarks, the Sultan explained that he led a delegation representing all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria to pay homage to the Olubadan. "We are here on a solidarity visit to our Chief Landlord to express our gratitude for not only giving us the land on which the university was built but also providing us the enabling environment," he stated.

The Sultan assured that the university would continue to consult the Olubadan for guidance and support when necessary, strengthening the institution's connection with its host community.

Traditional Institution Strengthened

The Sultan further emphasized that the emergence of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland would significantly strengthen traditional institutions across Nigeria. He noted Oba Ladoja's extensive experience, having served as both state governor and member of the National Assembly, would bring substantial value to traditional leadership.

"With his wealth of experience, having served in both capacities, he will add more value to the traditional institution," the Sultan affirmed during the visit.

The historic gathering attracted members of the Sultan's entourage, senior officials from the University of Ibadan, various traditional rulers, and the President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole.

In a related development, the Olubadan had earlier issued a separate statement on November 17, 2025, encouraging the Sultan to maintain his active engagement in promoting religious tolerance throughout Nigeria. This consistent messaging underscores the importance both leaders place on interfaith harmony as essential for national stability.
