Timi Frank Issues Stern Warning Over ADC Crisis, Alleges Democratic Undermining
Prominent political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has raised a grave alarm, cautioning that recent developments surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) possess the potential to severely destabilize Nigeria's democratic framework and could even ignite widespread national unrest if not promptly and decisively addressed. In a strongly worded statement released from Abuja, Frank has called upon the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling APC-led government to reconsider their actions, which he describes as a direct threat to the nation's democratic foundations.
INEC's Suspension and Parallel Leadership Claims
The core of the controversy stems from a recent decision by INEC to suspend its official recognition of the ADC's national leadership, including that of Chairman David Mark. This suspension is pending the final determination of a lawsuit currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Compounding the situation is the emergence of a rival claim to the party's leadership by Nafiu Bala Gombe, creating a significant internal schism within the opposition party.
Frank alleges that this scenario is not an isolated incident but rather reflects a disturbing and growing pattern of systematic interference in the affairs of opposition political parties across Nigeria. He warned explicitly that such actions, if allowed to continue unchecked, possess the combustible potential to "set Nigeria on fire," plunging the nation into a crisis of governance and civil order.

"INEC and the APC-led government appear to be taking calculated steps that threaten the very bedrock of our democracy," Frank asserted. He elaborated that these recent maneuvers suggest a coordinated and deliberate attempt to weaken and cripple opposition parties well in advance of the crucial 2027 general elections. Drawing a stark and alarming historical parallel, Frank compared the current political climate to the regime of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, alleging that present trends ominously mirror past authoritarian efforts to suppress and dismantle democratic institutions.
Furthermore, Frank expressed profound concern over the actions and policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming they signal a dangerous drift towards authoritarianism and a blatant disregard for democratic norms. "Recent developments raise serious and legitimate concerns about the future of democratic governance in Nigeria," he stated emphatically.
Broader Pattern of Opposition Party Crises
The activist expanded his critique beyond the ADC, alleging that the internal crises plaguing other major opposition parties—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—may not be entirely organic. He suggested the possibility of external influences and manipulations designed to foster division and weakness within the opposition bloc, warning that this destabilizing strategy is now being aggressively extended to encompass the African Democratic Congress.
Criticism of the Judiciary and Call for International Action
Frank also launched a scathing criticism of the Nigerian judiciary, accusing it of being weaponized to frustrate opposition parties through what he termed questionable, biased, and frivolous legal rulings. "The courts have been strategically used to thwart genuine democratic processes with legally unsound decisions," he alleged. In response to these perceived injustices, he issued a direct appeal to the international community, particularly the government of the United States and its leadership, to intervene in safeguarding Nigerian democracy.
He specifically called for the imposition of targeted sanctions, including visa restrictions and asset freezes, on any electoral and judicial officials found to be culpable in undermining democratic processes. Frank urged the US, under its leadership, to remain vigilant and actively support democratic values within Nigeria.

Highlighting the risk of national instability, Frank warned that opposition figures are increasingly being targeted through politically motivated arrests and legal harassments. "Nigeria is steadily heading towards a political and social crisis that may become difficult to contain if urgent remedial steps are not taken immediately," he cautioned.
To counter this trend, he passionately urged all Nigerians, alongside robust civil society organizations and key professional bodies, to rise and vocally defend democracy. He specifically named the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) as crucial institutions that must break their silence and advocate for democratic integrity.
Frank concluded on a note of historical defiance, maintaining that the Nigerian people have a proven track record of resisting anti-democratic tendencies and are prepared to do so again. "The fundamental freedoms of association and the sacred right to choose our leaders must be protected at all costs. Enough is truly enough," he declared.
