President Tinubu Announces Key Appointments in Energy and Power Sectors
President Bola Tinubu has made significant leadership changes by appointing Professor Shu'aibu Shehu Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and renewing the tenure of Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). These decisions, announced on Thursday, take immediate effect, as confirmed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in an official statement.
New Leadership for Petroleum Technology Development Fund
Professor Shu'aibu Shehu Aliyu replaces Ahmed Galadima Aminu, who resigned from the PTDF to pursue the 2027 governorship race in Adamawa State. Aliyu, a seasoned academic and administrator, brings extensive experience in research, education, and institutional leadership to the role. The Presidency highlighted that this appointment reflects Tinubu's commitment to strengthening strategic institutions within the petroleum sector and deepening human capital development in Nigeria's energy industry.
President Tinubu expects Professor Aliyu to leverage his expertise to reposition the PTDF for greater impact in capacity building, innovation, and strategic support for the oil and gas sector, aligning with national priorities. This move aims to enhance the agency's role in fostering growth and development in Nigeria's critical energy landscape.
Renewal of Tenure for Transmission Company of Nigeria
In a parallel decision, President Tinubu approved the renewal of Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz's appointment as the Managing Director and CEO of TCN for a second and final term. This renewal follows a comprehensive review of Abdulaziz's performance, which has seen notable improvements under his leadership. Key achievements include enhanced grid stability, expansion of transmission capacity, and system modernisation, all of which have consolidated TCN's role in Nigeria's electricity value chain.
With over three decades of experience in the power sector, Abdulaziz has also played a pivotal role in advancing regional electricity integration through his leadership in the West African Power Pool (WAPP). His continued tenure is expected to build on these successes, driving further progress in Nigeria's power transmission infrastructure.
Administration's Vision and Expectations
President Tinubu has charged both appointees to discharge their duties with diligence, integrity, and a strong sense of national service, in line with the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda. These appointments underscore the government's focus on bolstering key sectors to support economic growth and development. By placing experienced professionals in critical roles, Tinubu aims to ensure that institutions like PTDF and TCN contribute effectively to Nigeria's strategic goals in energy and power.
The swift implementation of these changes signals a proactive approach to governance, with immediate effects intended to streamline operations and enhance performance across these vital agencies. As Nigeria continues to navigate challenges in its energy and power sectors, these leadership decisions are poised to drive innovation, stability, and long-term sustainability.
