Tinubu Ramps Up Global Engagement on Security and Media Priorities
President Bola Tinubu is intensifying regional and international collaborations to address insecurity, while also focusing on media sector concerns, according to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. Speaking after a meeting with the President in Lagos on Sunday, Idris emphasized that the administration is deepening ties with neighboring countries and global partners as part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle security threats, particularly in the Sahel region.
Security Takes Center Stage in Regional Diplomacy
Idris highlighted that terrorism and related crimes transcend national borders, making it essential for Nigeria to work closely with allies. He pointed to recent diplomatic engagements, including discussions with Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and consultations with partners such as the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, as evidence of a coordinated push to restore peace. "It is very significant because we are fighting terrorism. Terrorism has no borders… it is almost impossible for Nigeria to act alone," the minister stated, underscoring the centrality of regional cooperation in ongoing efforts.
According to Idris, President Tinubu's security engagements have remained active even during the Easter period, which he described as a "working Easter" for the Commander-in-Chief. "He just came back from Jos, and security is uppermost in his mind. He keeps engaging with the security agencies on how we can find a lasting solution… in collaboration with our regional and international partners," Idris added, reinforcing the administration's commitment to resolving security challenges.
Media Industry Concerns Addressed at High Level
Beyond security, Idris revealed that President Tinubu is prioritizing issues affecting the media industry, following recent engagements with media executives. He disclosed that concerns around the welfare and operational environment of media organizations were among the first topics raised during the meeting. "Mr President has the media industry in mind… a number of issues were raised, and he is looking at them dispassionately. He has asked me for my input and will take a final decision on how he can help the media to do its work better," Idris explained.
He further noted that Tinubu has directed him to reassure Nigerians that their concerns are being taken seriously, urging citizens to remain united and patriotic as the government works to resolve pressing national challenges. "Mr President is listening. He is a keen watcher of events… and he has asked Nigerians to come together, reflect and be more patriotic as he works to ensure that issues of security are resolved once and for all," he added.
Economic Reforms Gain Global Recognition
On the economic front, Idris said the administration is encouraged by positive feedback from international development partners and rating agencies, noting that Nigeria's ongoing reforms are gaining global recognition. "Everybody is seeing that the reforms are actually working… Nigeria is finding its place in the comity of nations once again," he stated, highlighting the progress in economic policies.
Idris explained that his visit formed part of routine briefings with the President on national developments, ensuring continuous alignment on key issues.
Business Leader Extends Goodwill to President
In a related development, Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, also met with President Tinubu at his Lagos residence, where he paid a post-Eid al-Fitr homage and extended birthday wishes. Rabiu described the visit as a longstanding tradition, noting that although the Sallah celebrations had passed, it was important to personally convey goodwill and prayers to the President. "I also took the opportunity to extend birthday wishes… and offered prayers for good health, long life, wisdom and continued strength as he leads our nation," he said.
Rabiu added that the visit reaffirmed his appreciation and continued support for the President, underscoring the collaborative spirit between the government and private sector.
