President Tinubu Urges APC Unity, Defends Reforms at National Convention
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a powerful address at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held at Eagle Square in Abuja, rallying party members to remain united and focused on national development. He declared that the party's strength lies not in its size but in its cohesion and shared vision, describing the gathering as a defining moment in both the party's evolution and Nigeria's democratic journey.
Emphasis on Unity and Discipline
Addressing thousands of delegates, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the APC's growth since its formation in 2013, noting that its founding was driven by a collective resolve to rescue Nigeria from economic decline and reposition it for progress. "This convention is not merely a gathering; it is an opportunity to renew our bond, strengthen our resolve, and recommit ourselves to the ideals that brought us together," he said.
The President stressed that unity remains the cornerstone of progress, warning that political parties often collapse not because of electoral defeat but due to internal divisions fueled by personal ambition and lack of discipline. "Our greatest strength has never been in our size or numbers, but our unity," Tinubu emphasized. "We must guard against ego overriding ideology and ambition replacing discipline."
He urged party members to ensure the convention sends a clear signal to Nigerians and the international community that the APC remains strong, united, and forward-looking.
Defense of Democratic Principles and Reforms
Tinubu dismissed concerns that the ruling party seeks to dominate Nigeria's political space, reaffirming his commitment to democratic principles and the role of opposition in governance. "We do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and credible opposition that can challenge and refine policies," he stated.
The President, however, criticized persistent attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026, insisting that the law followed due legislative processes and reflects Nigeria's collective desire to strengthen its electoral system.
Highlighting his administration's achievements, Tinubu said the government has made notable progress despite global economic pressures, including the impact of international conflicts. He listed key milestones:
- Infrastructure development
- Fiscal reforms
- Social investment programmes
- Improved security efforts
According to him, economic indicators are showing signs of recovery, with declining inflation, improved foreign exchange buffers, trade surpluses, and renewed investor confidence. "Our stock market is booming, business confidence is returning, and Nigeria has regained global financial credibility," he asserted.
Addressing Challenges and Inclusion
The President acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector, including debts and ageing infrastructure, but assured that reforms—such as the establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company—would boost electricity supply.
Tinubu also used the platform to address young people and women, calling for greater inclusion in party leadership and governance. "To our youth, you are not only the future—you are our present strength. This party must open more doors for your participation as decision-makers," he said. "To the women of Nigeria, your role is essential. A party that empowers women strengthens itself."
He urged delegates, aspirants, and party leaders to conduct themselves with integrity throughout the convention, stressing that internal contests must not lead to division. "At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor. We are one family," he added.
Tributes and Future Outlook
The President paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and other departed party members, acknowledging their contributions to the party's formation and growth. He also commended members of the convention planning committee and APC governors for their roles in organising the event, describing their efforts as instrumental to its success.
Tinubu further noted that the APC has continued to expand its political base, with increasing defections from other parties, which he said reflects growing public confidence in its leadership. He charged newly elected party officials to lead with humility, fairness, and dedication, emphasizing that the future of both the APC and Nigeria's democracy depends on their conduct.
The convention, attended by party leaders, delegates, and stakeholders from across the country—including members of the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led Progressives Governors Forum (PGF)—is expected to produce a new set of national officers to steer the APC ahead of future electoral contests.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to national development and democratic governance, expressing optimism that the sacrifices being made today would yield long-term prosperity for Nigerians.
