President Tinubu Urges Senate to Amend Constitution for State Police Framework
President Bola Tinubu has called on the leadership of the 10th Senate to commence the process of amending the Nigerian Constitution to establish a legal framework for the creation of state police. He emphasized that this move is essential to address the nation's escalating security challenges effectively.
Appeal Made During Interfaith Breakfast Meeting
The appeal was delivered on Wednesday during an interfaith breakfast gathering with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted the urgent need for decentralized policing in light of evolving security threats.
Tinubu pointed out that the current nature of insecurity, which includes terrorism, banditry, and insurgency, necessitates a more localized approach to law enforcement. He argued that empowering states with policing authority would enhance grassroots security and enable faster responses to local threats.
"We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency. But we will never fail to make the right response to these challenges," the President stated. "What I will ask for tonight is for you (Senators) to start thinking about how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate state police for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders and free our children from fear."
Complementing Federal Security Structures
Tinubu explained that the proposed state police would work in tandem with the existing federal security apparatus, promoting intelligence-driven and community-based law enforcement strategies. He stressed that this collaborative approach is vital for improving overall security across the nation.
The President also commended the harmonious working relationship between the executive and the National Assembly, noting that unity between both branches of government is crucial in tackling insecurity effectively. "It is a good thing that we are working in harmony. We are looking forward to a country that evolves, a country that takes care of its citizens and protects all," he added.
Praise for Senate Support on Key Reforms
During the meeting, Tinubu praised the Senate for its support of significant reforms under his administration, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and tax reforms. He described these measures as bold but necessary steps toward national progress.
"I have a lot of credit for bold reforms. Without your collaboration and inspiration, those reforms would not have been possible. We are reformists together," Tinubu said, highlighting that ending the subsidy regime helped curb what he termed "monumental corruption."
Senate President's Response
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed gratitude to Tinubu for hosting the interfaith breakfast and described his leadership as critical during this pivotal period for Nigeria. Akpabio noted that the administration's reforms have led to increased revenue allocations to states, allowing governors to undertake infrastructure projects. He also offered prayers for peace and prosperity in the country.
The call for constitutional amendment to establish state police marks a significant step in Nigeria's ongoing efforts to enhance security and address localized threats more effectively.
