President Bola Tinubu is presiding over a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House in Abuja, marking the first session since June 29, 2026. The meeting commenced with the national anthem after the President arrived at the Council Chamber at approximately 2:30pm on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, to chair the session attended by key government officials.
Attendees and Opening of the Session
The meeting was attended by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume; the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; members of the Federal Executive Council; presidential aides; and heads of government agencies. Shortly before the commencement of the meeting, SGF Senator George Akume called for a minute's silence in memory of two former members of the Council who passed away between the last meeting and the current session.
Tributes to Late Former Ministers
The minute's silence observed by the Council honored Abubakar Alhaji, who served as Minister of Finance under the Ibrahim Babangida administration and died on July 30, 2026, and Professor Turner Isoun, former Minister of Science and Technology under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, who died on July 15, 2026. Their contributions to the nation were acknowledged by the Council members present.
Context of the June 29 FEC Meeting
At the last FEC meeting on June 29, 2026, which was convened after a break of more than two months, President Tinubu swore in two new Federal Commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission: Amina Gamawa, representing Bauchi State, and Abdullahi Mukhtar, representing Kaduna State, shortly before the council session commenced. That session had similarly drawn attention due to the prolonged hiatus in Council meetings.
Details of Wednesday's Meeting Yet to Be Disclosed
At the time of filing this report, details of Wednesday's FEC meeting are yet to be disclosed. The agenda and any decisions taken during the session remain unknown pending official communication from the Presidency or the State House. The meeting underscores the administration's resumption of regular Council activities after the extended break.
