President Tinubu Declares Democratic Philosophy Will Live and Die With Him

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a powerful declaration about his political philosophy, stating that his identity as a "diehard democrat" will "live and die with me." Unwavering Commitment to Democratic Principles

According to a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu used the occasion to reiterate his firm commitment to sustaining democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. The 73-year-old president emphasized that this commitment forms a crucial part of his lasting legacy for the nation.

"I am a die-hard democrat," Tinubu declared during the gathering that included members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leadership of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). Historical Struggle for Democracy

The president reflected on Nigeria's democratic journey over the past 26 years, noting that many political actors, including himself, had made significant sacrifices for the democratic system. Tinubu recounted personal experiences that shaped his democratic convictions.

"Some of us had been bruised struggling for it," he stated. "We were detained, we protested, we had street demonstrations, we went into exile and all of that. We formed NADECO. I followed the leadership destiny that God has chosen for me."

Strengthening Internal Party Democracy

President Tinubu highlighted the importance of strengthening internal democracy within political parties as fundamental to building credible electoral institutions, processes, and systems. He specifically mentioned that direct primaries provide party members with better opportunities to participate and determine their representatives at various levels of governance.

The Nigerian leader assured that under his administration, there would be no threats to any democrat, emphasizing that "the rule of law must prevail in any democracy." He articulated the democratic principle that "the majority will have their way, and the minority will have their say and their way."

Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

In his address to party leaders, President Tinubu further assured his commitment to free and fair elections, positioning himself as an ordinary registered voter on the same platform as other citizens. He drew from his own political journey to reinforce this commitment.

"I am a registered voter. I am on the same platform as you," Tinubu stated. "I'm going to stick to my platform. When it was against me years ago, I toed the line. I was in opposition without a threat to any human being except the military junta."

The president expressed his fundamental belief in democracy, noting the voluntary nature of democratic participation that has been established in Nigeria since its return to democratic governance.

Foundation for National Unity

President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria's unity and stability rest on the pillars of good governance, assuring Nigerians that his administration will continue to uphold these principles for posterity. His remarks came during a significant gathering that brought together political leaders from across party lines, demonstrating the administration's commitment to inclusive governance.

The president's declaration about his democratic philosophy has sparked discussions across political circles, with many viewing it as a reaffirmation of his administration's commitment to democratic values amid ongoing political developments in the country.
