President Donald Trump has revealed that he is contemplating launching an attack on Iran on a scale surpassing all previous U.S. military operations against the country. The disclosure came as the U.S. military completed its 12th consecutive day of strikes against Tehran on Wednesday.
Trump's Statement on Potential Attack
In an interview with Axios, Trump stated: “I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it.” He added that Israel would join the U.S. military operation if he requested, but emphasized that American forces do not require assistance to execute the strikes he is considering.
When asked about efforts to revive negotiations to end the conflict, Trump remarked that the Iranian regime has not “received enough pain yet,” suggesting that further military pressure is necessary before Tehran is willing to reach a final agreement.
Rubio's 'Head for an Eye' Policy
Earlier on Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized Trump’s military stance toward Tehran as a “head for an eye.” Rubio made this comment to reporters at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ 2026 annual summit in Manila, Philippines. His statement was in response to a threat from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who had described Tehran’s defense strategy against the U.S. as an “eye for an eye.”
“The president’s policy is a head for an eye,” Rubio said. “I mean honestly, that’s what it’s going to be. I mean, [Iran] will pay a very heavy price for the things they’re doing.”
Ongoing Military Strikes and Ceasefire Violations
The U.S. military conducted its 12th consecutive day of strikes against Tehran on Wednesday evening, according to U.S. Central Command. Both the United States and Iran have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement that was adopted under a memorandum of understanding last month. The escalating rhetoric and continued military action indicate a deepening confrontation between the two nations.
Trump told Axios that the Iranians “want to negotiate” but are not yet prepared to reach a final agreement, reiterating his belief that they need to suffer more consequences before engaging in serious talks.
