The spokesman for Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has dismissed singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over his appeal regarding the upcoming Osun State governorship election. In a statement released on August 5, 2026, the governor's spokesman, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, described Davido's plea as "emotional blackmail" and insisted that the governor has no authority to influence the election's outcome.
Davido's Appeal Misdirected, Says Spokesman
Nwaogwugwu asserted that Davido's appeal was misdirected because Uzodimma, who chairs the APC National Campaign Council for the Osun election, cannot determine the result of the vote. The statement read: "His appeal should be directed to the people of Osun State, who are the ones that will ultimately decide the outcome of the election through their votes."
The governor's spokesman also criticized Davido's reasoning for reaching out to Uzodimma, noting that the singer only did so because his wife, Chioma, hails from Imo State. Nwaogwugwu called this reasoning "rather pedestrian" and reiterated Uzodimma's commitment to a peaceful and credible election while campaigning for the APC candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, also known as AMBO.
Davido Urged to Prepare Uncle for Life After Office
In a pointed remark, the statement declared that Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido's uncle, has "failed woefully" in his responsibilities and that Osun voters are ready to remove him from power. Nwaogwugwu advised Davido to focus on helping his uncle prepare for life after office rather than attempting to influence Uzodimma through emotional appeals.
The spokesman added a sarcastic suggestion, saying Davido should "begin making preparations to officially sign his uncle as a dancer in his musical band," given the perceived mood of voters ahead of the August 15 poll.

The Osun governorship election is set to hold on August 15, 2026, with the APC and the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a tight contest for control of the state. The election follows a series of controversies, including reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly froze an Osun State Government account used for salary payments. Davido had earlier reacted to those reports, which became a major talking point after documents cited in reports claimed the account had been placed on a "Post No Debit" status.
