Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Ikwerre ethnic nationality will maintain its significant and influential position in the political landscape of Nigeria. He issued a stern warning that any attempt to sideline the group would be a grave mistake.
A Firm Declaration of Political Strength
Wike made this powerful statement on the evening of Sunday, December 28, 2025. He was speaking during a special Christmas visit to his supporters at the palace of His Royal Highness, Ohna Sergent Awuse, in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Minister emphasized the enduring political weight of the Ikwerre people, stating they have moved from being politically overlooked to becoming a central voice in national affairs. "I've told everybody, you cannot ignore us. If you try that, at your own peril," Wike firmly reminded all political actors.
From 'Nothing' to a National Voice
Reflecting on the journey of his people, Wike expressed pride in their progress. He noted that the perception of the Ikwerre has transformed dramatically. "Ikwerre ethnic nationality has come to stay, whether anybody likes it or not, we have come to stay. Before, they said Ikwerre people are nothing, now we are something. Now we talk to Nigeria, Nigeria will understand," he stated.
He specifically pointed to the decisive role played by the four Ikwerre local government areas in securing victory for President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential elections. This, he indicated, is a clear testament to their electoral importance.
A Call for Unity and Continued Advancement
Wike used the occasion to encourage his kinsmen to seize the current political momentum and remain united. He cautioned that anyone who has benefited from Ikwerre support but plans to repay them with harm should be ready for the consequences.
Asserting his personal commitment to the development of the region, the FCT Minister concluded with a resolute promise: "So, don't lose this opportunity. I know what is good for our people, and nobody can stop me from doing good for our people." His message underscores a strategic push for the Ikwerre to consolidate their hard-earned political relevance.
