FCT Minister Wike Reassures Abuja Residents on Governance Continuity
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has delivered a strong message to residents of Abuja, emphasizing that governance and service delivery will continue uninterrupted despite the upcoming local government elections. Wike made these remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects in the nation's capital on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Political Timelines Will Not Halt Development Projects
Wike clearly stated that political activities, including the scheduled Local Government Area elections set for February 21, 2026 across the six area councils, will not interfere with the FCT's development agenda. The minister explained that the government's primary responsibility remains focused on the welfare of residents, regardless of electoral cycles.
"Politics is different. You have to serve the people. Politics has its own time, and the work will continue to go on. Politics is not going to affect it," Wike declared during his project inspection.
Project Execution as Proof of Renewed Hope Agenda
The former Rivers State governor emphasized that visible project execution is central to demonstrating the sincerity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. Wike noted that tangible results matter more to citizens than political rhetoric.
"The only way to make sure that people will be happy and see that the Renewed Hope Agenda is real is to continue with the work," Wike asserted, highlighting the administration's commitment to delivering on its promises.
Strategic Infrastructure Projects Underway
During his inspection, Wike visited the Institutional Research Road, which connects Nile University, the Body of Benchers, and other important institutions. This road serves as an alternative route to the older road leading to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission headquarters.
The minister described this infrastructure as a strategic artery expected to handle significant traffic once completed. Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the contractor is expected to hand over the project by the end of May, with inauguration planned during President Tinubu's third year in office.
Recent Developments in FCT Administration
The minister's assurance comes amid recent administrative developments in the Federal Capital Territory:
- Activities at the FCTA and FCDA were recently halted as workers began an indefinite strike called by the Joint Union Action Committee
- Union leaders ordered staff to remain at home, with task forces deployed to enforce compliance
- The FCTA management had not issued an official response at the time, raising concerns about administrative service disruptions
In a positive development, Wike recently approved the promotion of over 2,000 staff members of the FCDA and FCTA following recently concluded examinations. These promotions spanned 165 cadres and were conducted using a Computer-Based Test system. The FCT Civil Service Commission indicated that promotion exercises would continue regularly, urging civil servants to prepare for future assessments.
Wike's message reinforces the administration's commitment to maintaining governance continuity and development momentum in Nigeria's capital city, regardless of political timelines and electoral activities.
