In a significant diplomatic move, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has been chosen to be part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's official delegation to the 20th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in South Africa.
Nigerian Delegation and Summit Details
The high-profile summit is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on November 22 and 23, 2025. According to a statement released by the Governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal will be joined by six other state governors in the President's entourage.
The selected governors represent states across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, including Osun, Plateau, Gombe, Katsina, Niger, Enugu, and Nasarawa. This gathering will see participation from all G20 member states, 16 guest countries, and six nations representing regional economic communities from Africa, the Caribbean, and East Asia.
Agenda and Bilateral Engagements
The two-day leaders' summit, which marks the climax of the G20 process, will feature three intensive plenary sessions. Discussions are set to cover a wide array of critical global issues.
Key topics on the agenda include:
- Trade, development finance, and the global debt challenge
- Climate change, food systems, and the just energy transition
- The future of work, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence
Held under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” the summit will convene leaders of the world's top economies alongside major international bodies like the African Union and European Union.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu is expected to hold strategic bilateral meetings aimed at advancing his Renewed Hope Agenda and strengthening cooperation on peace, security, and economic development.
President's Extended Continental Visit
Following the conclusion of the G20 Summit, President Tinubu will proceed to Luanda, Angola, for the 7th African Union-European Union Summit from November 24 to 25, 2025.
This subsequent meeting will bring together Heads of State, young leaders, innovators, and civil society organizations to address shared continental priorities such as climate adaptation, digital transformation, and agribusiness.
The President's invitation to the G20 was extended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current chair of the group, following a similar invitation from Brazil during its 2024 chairmanship.
