Priest: World Moves On 24 Hours After Archbishop's Death

Rev. Kelvin Ugwu, a Nigerian Catholic priest, has reminded people not to overestimate their importance, noting that the world does not stop when one dies. He made this observation in a Facebook post on Monday, August 17, 2026, following the swift succession process after the death of Archbishop Akubueze of the Archdiocese of Benin.

Archbishop's Office Filled Within 24 Hours

According to Rev. Ugwu, Archbishop Akubueze's position was occupied by another person less than 24 hours after his death. He noted that while the world may pause to mourn when someone passes away, life continues.

“Archbishop Akubeze of the Archdiocese of Benin died on Thursday, July 9, at the age of 69. He died in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, while on vacation,” he wrote. “According to reports, he passed away peacefully in his sleep.”

New Apostolic Administrator Announced the Next Day

Rev. Ugwu detailed that the following day, Friday, July 10, a new Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese was announced. Most Rev. Donatus Ogun, Bishop of Uromi, stepped in immediately.

“In less than 24 hours after his death, the office he occupied was already occupied by another. His body had not even returned to Nigeria,” he added.

A Lesson in Humility

Rev. Ugwu concluded with a reflective message: “Learn from this, the world may stop to mourn you, but it will not stop because of you. Don’t overestimate yourself.”

The priest's comments serve as a reminder of the transient nature of earthly roles and the importance of humility, even in the face of significant loss.
