Governor Abiodun Urges Traditional Rulers to Foster Investor-Friendly Environment in Ogun State
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has issued a strong appeal to traditional rulers across the state, emphasizing the critical need to cultivate a conducive and investor-friendly atmosphere within their domains. He warned that any hostility towards investors could severely undermine the state's economic growth and development prospects.
Addressing Concerns Over Community Resistance
The governor made these remarks during the Statutory Meeting of the Ogun State Council of Obas, held on Thursday at the Oba's Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Abiodun expressed deep concern over reported cases of uncooperative attitudes by some communities, particularly in areas such as Yewa South, Ipokia, and Ijebu North. He condemned what he described as resistance to investors who are willing to commit substantial capital to boost the state's economy.
He stressed that such investments are vital for job creation, infrastructure development, and overall socio-economic progress. Abiodun urged communities to embrace development initiatives rather than frustrate them, stating, "We have received disturbing reports about the conduct of some communities during recent investor engagements. This is unacceptable. These investors are bringing in significant capital that will transform our economy, create jobs for our people, and improve livelihoods. They must be welcomed and supported."
Role of Traditional Rulers in Development
Abiodun highlighted the central role of traditional rulers in attracting and sustaining development. He urged them to take responsibility for ensuring peace and cooperation within their domains, saying, "Kabiyesis, I urge you to work closely with your people to create an enabling environment for investors. Development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of hostility and distrust. We must position Ogun State as a preferred investment destination."
The governor reiterated his administration's commitment to protecting investments, warning that any actions capable of discouraging investors would not be tolerated. He emphasized that fostering a positive investment climate is essential for the state's long-term prosperity.
Addressing Security and Land Management Issues
Beyond investment concerns, Abiodun also called for increased vigilance in response to rising insecurity in parts of the country. He urged residents and traditional institutions to report suspicious activities promptly to security agencies. While acknowledging ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address national security challenges, he stressed that community-level vigilance remains crucial for maintaining peace in Ogun State.
Additionally, the governor cautioned traditional rulers against indiscriminate land allocation and involvement in land disputes. He described land as a critical economic asset that must be managed transparently, stating, "Our land is our oil. It must not be allocated carelessly. We must ensure that land matters are handled responsibly to attract and retain genuine investors."
He further warned landlords against renting properties to individuals involved in criminal activities, noting that any building found to be used for unlawful purposes would be demolished.
Government and Traditional Institution Collaboration
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hazmat, explained that the meeting—the first in 2026—was convened to address security and development issues while strengthening collaboration between the government and traditional institutions.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Council and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, commended the governor's developmental strides and reaffirmed the council's support for policies aimed at economic growth and stability.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of 40 utility vehicles to traditional rulers. This initiative is designed to enhance their administrative capabilities and community engagement roles, further supporting their efforts in fostering development across Ogun State.
