In a significant move to bolster security and enhance justice delivery at the grassroots level, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved the recruitment and training of 500 new personnel for the state's Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps.
Strengthening Security Architecture
The governor made this announcement during the inauguration ceremony of new Justices of the Peace held on Friday in Akure, the state capital. Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the recruitment of additional Amotekun operatives is crucial for improving the state's security architecture and complementing the efforts of existing security personnel.
This strategic decision comes as part of the governor's broader initiative to address security challenges across Ondo State. The newly recruited operatives will undergo comprehensive training to enhance their capacity in combating crime and maintaining public safety.
Revival of Justice of the Peace System
In a parallel development marking a significant judicial milestone, Governor Aiyedatiwa inaugurated 130 new Justices of the Peace, ending a 17-year period of inactivity for the office. The governor described this revival as a turning point in reinforcing justice at the grassroots level.
The appointment of 130 JPs drawn from diverse backgrounds reflects the state's commitment to inclusive justice delivery. Aiyedatiwa stressed that this initiative aligns with the "order, security and the rule of law" component of his administration's agenda.
During the swearing-in ceremony, the governor urged the new JPs to embrace their roles as a "sacred responsibility" that demands integrity, wisdom, decorum, and fairness. He assured them of government support as they undertake their duties in mediating disputes, maintaining social order, and promoting community harmony.
Comprehensive Judicial Reforms
The event highlighted the state government's broader judicial reforms, which include several key initiatives:
- Recruitment of additional state counsels to strengthen legal representation
- Expansion of the judiciary to improve access to justice
- Near completion of a new Judiciary Complex featuring ceremonial courts, modular courts, and a library
These infrastructure developments are specifically designed to support the timely delivery of justice and enhance the overall efficiency of the judicial system.
Attorney General Kayode Ajulo provided historical context, tracing the JP institution to its 14th-century English origins and its adoption during Nigeria's colonial era. He noted that Ondo State last appointed Justices of the Peace in 2008, describing the office as a crucial link between government and communities.
Ajulo outlined the statutory powers granted to JPs under Section 12 of the Magistrates' Court Law, which enables them to preserve peace, quell disturbances, and seek assistance when necessary. He emphasized that appointees were selected based on merit, moral standing, integrity, humility, and commitment to peaceful conduct.
The Chief Judge, represented by Justice Akintan Osadebe, administered the oath-taking and detailed the JPs' functions. Justice Odusola described the office as "legal and quasi-judicial" and instructed appointees to consult their handbook, which outlines duties including:
- Mediating disputes and maintaining public order
- Administering oaths and authenticating documents
- Visiting detention facilities and inspecting conditions
- Handling detainees' complaints
- Supporting official processes for visas, passports, and other legal matters
Responding on behalf of the appointees, Bashorun 'Seinde Arogbofa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the significance of their roles in promoting justice and peace across the state. He pledged the appointees' commitment to supporting the judiciary and advancing grassroots engagement in maintaining law and order.
This dual initiative of strengthening security through Amotekun expansion and revitalizing grassroots justice through JPs represents a comprehensive approach to enhancing public safety and legal accessibility throughout Ondo State.
