Former Niger State Governor Dr Babangida Aliyu has issued a strong demand for immediate security improvements across Nigeria, expressing deep concern about the escalating violence and kidnappings affecting the nation.
Growing Insecurity Crisis
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation made his remarks during a dinner organized to celebrate his 70th birthday in Kaduna. Eminent Nigerians, former governors, and close associates gathered to honor the statesman at the event that highlighted both celebration and serious national concerns.
Dr Aliyu delivered a poignant comparison between current security challenges and the historical leadership of Northern Nigeria. "The North now has 19 Sardaunas but lacks the peace and order once associated with the late Premier of Northern Nigeria," he lamented, referring to the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello.
Government's Primary Responsibility
The former governor emphasized that the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, and general insecurity have reached unacceptable levels. He stressed that protecting citizens should remain the fundamental obligation of any administration, stating that infrastructure projects cannot replace this core duty.
"Flyovers and physical projects cannot replace the fundamental obligation of securing citizens," Dr Aliyu declared. "Anytime you come to construct flyovers or whatever may be infrastructure, but your core responsibility is to protect the lives of the people."
He recalled a time when even a single murder in the old Northern region sent shockwaves through communities, highlighting the stark contrast with current security realities.
Legacy of Leadership and Personal Reflection
Reflecting on Sir Ahmadu Bello's governance principles, Dr Aliyu noted that the Sardauna governed with integrity, sacrifice, and selflessness, leaving behind neither mansions nor personal wealth but establishing a lasting legacy of discipline and equitable leadership.
The celebrant, who humorously described himself as "70 years plus 13 days," shared that he has entered a phase of deeper reflection, gratitude, and commitment to seeking forgiveness from his Creator. He expressed appreciation to the foundation for honoring him despite his initial reluctance.
Dr Aliyu also recalled his early educational journey during the era of free, quality schooling funded under Sir Ahmadu Bello's leadership. He emphasized that the North must rediscover that legacy of purposeful governance, discipline, and investment in education.
Offering life advice to Nigerians, he urged people to embrace existence free of bitterness, malice, and jealousy. "Review your day before you sleep. If your good deeds outweigh the bad, you will live longer," he advised, emphasizing daily self-assessment as key to living well.
Tributes from Associates and Colleagues
The Director-General of the foundation, Mr Gambo Abubakar, read a citation detailing Dr Aliyu's distinguished public service career, which included roles as:
- Teacher
- Permanent Secretary
- Member of the House of Representatives
- Governor of Niger State
He described Dr Aliyu as a statesman of rare integrity whose leadership has significantly advanced the foundation's work in education, policy dialogue, humanitarian support, and youth development across Northern Nigeria.
Iyan Zazzau and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Munnir Jafaru, praised the pivotal role Dr Aliyu played in the foundation's formation and growth. He described the former governor as a founding father of the foundation and an instrumental force behind its vision and direction.
Former Kogi Governor, retired Captain Idris Wada, commended Dr Aliyu as "a sincere, hardworking, and super-intelligent leader" who consistently creates environments where people around him can thrive.
