Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has made a dramatic political declaration, stating he would resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to win Edo State in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Governor's Bold Promise on National Television
During an exclusive interview on AIT, Governor Okpebholo expressed unwavering confidence in President Tinubu's growing popularity across Edo State. The governor revealed that Tinubu has become even more popular than himself among Edo residents due to the positive impact of presidential initiatives in the region.
"Asiwaju is even more popular than me here now because Edo people already know that what I'm doing is because of Asiwaju's impact," the governor stated during the broadcast interview that has since generated significant political discourse.
APC's Dominance in Edo Political Landscape
Governor Okpebholo boldly claimed that the All Progressives Congress faces no real opposition in Edo State ahead of the 2027 general elections. He pointed to recent electoral performances as evidence of the party's strengthening position in the state.
"You will see the kind of result that will come out from here because there's no opposition in Edo," the governor asserted, referencing the recent bye-election results in Esan as concrete proof of APC's expanding influence.
Edo People Ready to Thank Tinubu With Votes
The governor emphasized that residents of Edo State are prepared to express their gratitude to President Tinubu through their ballots in the 2027 elections. Okpebholo insisted that "everybody is for Asiwaju" in the state and predicted overwhelming support for the president.
"The Esan and Edo people have not even told Asiwaju thank you, and how will they? It's going to be the votes. Everybody is for Asiwaju. The people will thank him with their votes," he explained during the interview.
Making his commitment absolutely clear, Governor Okpebholo concluded with his resignation pledge: "If he does not win, I'd resign." This statement has set the stage for high political stakes in Edo State as the 2027 elections approach.
