Edo Government Highlights Achievements in Roads, Healthcare, and Education
The Edo State Government has provided a comprehensive update on its performance over the past 18 months, emphasizing notable advancements in key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. According to official statements, the administration has implemented various projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents across the state.
Infrastructure and Road Maintenance Initiatives
In a recent briefing, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, announced the establishment of a rapid response agency dedicated to road maintenance. This agency focuses on addressing potholes and other road defects that have been prevalent throughout the state. Afegbua highlighted that this initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance transportation networks and ensure safer travel conditions for citizens.
Additionally, the government reported ongoing construction and ecological intervention projects across all 18 local councils. These efforts include road repairs and other infrastructure developments designed to support economic growth and community well-being.
Healthcare Expansion and Services
The administration has made significant strides in healthcare, with over 70 primary healthcare centers already built and an additional 160 currently under development. These facilities are being equipped to provide essential medical services, particularly for rural dwellers who often face challenges in accessing healthcare.
Afegbua explained that the primary healthcare centers are intended to offer immediate health interventions, allowing residents to receive preliminary care before seeking more specialized services at secondary healthcare centers. The government is also ensuring that secondary healthcare facilities are maintained to cater to urban populations, thereby creating a more robust and accessible healthcare system statewide.
Education and Youth Empowerment Programs
In the education sector, the Edo State Government has employed more than 6,000 teachers and plans to hire an additional 1,000 to strengthen the teaching workforce. This move aims to enhance educational quality and address staffing shortages in schools.
Furthermore, the government has approved a N1 billion bursary scheme for Edo indigenes enrolled in tertiary institutions. This financial support is designed to alleviate the burden of educational expenses and promote higher education among the state's youth.
Governor's Call for Youth Participation in Army Recruitment
In a related development, Governor Monday Okpebholo has encouraged eligible youths in Edo State to participate in the ongoing Nigerian Army 91 Regular Recruits Intake. This appeal was made in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, on Tuesday in Benin.
The statement noted that a Nigerian Army Sensitisation Team is scheduled to visit the state from April 8 to 14 to engage with and guide prospective applicants through the recruitment process. Governor Okpebholo urged qualified young men and women to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of national service and career development.
Overall, the Edo State Government's scorecard reflects a commitment to addressing critical needs in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, while also fostering youth engagement in national initiatives.
