Jonathan Mourns Ewhrudjakpo, Diri Orders Autopsy in Bayelsa
Jonathan Pays Tribute as Bayelsa Mourns Deputy Gov

The political landscape of Bayelsa State is draped in mourning following the sudden passing of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. The solemn atmosphere prompted a high-profile condolence visit from former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to Governor Douye Diri and the bereaved family at the Government House in Yenagoa.

A Leader Remembered for Diligence and Humility

During his visit, Dr. Jonathan painted a vivid picture of the late deputy governor as an exceptionally hardworking and humble leader. He revealed the pivotal role Ewhrudjakpo played in representing Governor Diri at numerous events for the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Foundation.

The former president specifically recalled the deputy governor's active participation in a democracy dialogue programme in Benin City, Edo State, where he successfully mobilised state assembly members and executive council commissioners. His dedication extended to an event in Accra, Ghana, and most recently, to the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Jonathan Foundation in Abuja on November 20.

"For me, he was somebody my foundation and I will never forget," Jonathan stated emotionally. He added a personal reflection, noting, "I was also a deputy governor, but he worked harder than me. He appeared not to rest. This is even a lesson for us all to find time to rest."

Governor Diri's Directive and Plea for Decorum

In his response, Governor Douye Diri expressed profound gratitude to the former president for being the first to officially pay a condolence visit. He then addressed the swirling rumours surrounding the deputy governor's death with a significant announcement.

Governor Diri disclosed that he has directed a comprehensive medical autopsy to definitively determine the cause of Senator Ewhrudjakpo's death. This move appears aimed at quelling speculation and providing clarity.

The governor issued a strong caution against politicising the tragic incident, particularly on social media platforms. He invoked Ijaw tradition, stating, "In Ijaw land, there is no enmity in death. Let nobody politicise the death of our dearly beloved deputy governor." He urged the public to honour Ewhrudjakpo's memory and respect the state's official three-day mourning period.

A Final Visit and State of Mourning

Following the formal remarks, Governor Diri and former President Jonathan visited Barrister Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, the widow of the late deputy governor, at their official residence within the Government House complex to offer their personal condolences.

The state government has declared three working days of mourning, expecting all citizens to join in reflecting on the life of a man described as a dedicated servant of Bayelsa. The incident has cast a pall over the state, with leaders calling for unity and solemn reflection during this difficult time.
